Today we’d like to introduce you to Mirella Huerta.
Hi Mirella, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Mirella Huerta. I am married with a beautiful son named Leo. My husband (Oscar) and I started Spooky Crafts with the hope of bringing our love of Halloween and Horror and Arts and Crafts for families to enjoy. We started Spooky Crafts to help us through our journey of expanding our family through IVF. We thought what better way to help grow our family while creating great memories with our others who love halloween and horror as much as we do.
I grew up loving arts and crafts and wanted to bring that experience to others. Although Halloween/ Horror has a big following there aren’t many crafts out there other than the generic ghost and pumpkin that you can purchase only during Halloween. I wanted to create something that I personally would buy. I learned how to make figures out of plaster and focused on Halloween, Horror, and Dia De Los Muertos. The figures I make are magnetic so people are able display them in their homes. I have had customers who have had my art on their refrigerators for years and they continue to come back every year to add to their collection. Other Items that we have added to our crafts include DIY canvases, room posters, and T-Shirts.
Our businesses host interactive booths at community events throughout the Los Angeles and Orange County. We have been fortunate to have been participated in halloween conventions including Mid Summer Scream, Creep It Real OC, Terror Market, Monster Mall and more.
Our canvases have been sold in store at places like Blast From the Past and Rock N Slime in Burbank and The Midnight Hour in the San Fernando Valley. We recently opened have a Shopify store in which we have some our plaster crafts for sale along with a some T- Shirts that we created for the LAUSD Educators strike.
We had such a huge success with our Educator Shirts that it has inspired me to create a line of T-shirts for Educators. The shirts will be Halloween horror themed but school appropriate so that us Educators can use our spooky shirts year round. We have 3 new designs coming out this October.
All of our art is hand made by me and my family and now we have expanded to a few family friends, Since our business was built with the intention of supporting our family I wanted to do just that. My nieces and sister help create the art and host events we participate in. We love working together bringing crafts and joy to those who love Halloween and horror.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We have defiantly experienced some struggles along the way. Finding the right community and the right events to participate was definitely a challenge. Having the non horror fans saying can’t you just have something that’s not spooky retaliated so my kids can participate, The economy has definitely hit us hard people are not purchasing as much as they used to so it’s difficult to be able to be more creative and continue to invest in new crafts ideas.
I have a two year old so navigating being a parent ,working full time, and owning a business has been extremely difficult.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We host interactive spaces for guest children and adults to create their own arts and crafts. All of our crafts are Halloween, horror, and Dia De Los Muertos. Our crafts include magnetic figures, canvases, posters, and T-Shirts.
We make everything by hand from our home.
Our most popular items are our magnetic figures. We have a very large collection of villains and horror characters that customers can paint on their own and display on their refrigerators.
What sets up apart form others is that all of our crafts are created for lovers of Halloween and horror year round no exceptions everything must be spooky.
I am most proud of that I have been able to stick to my theme and have not catered to the main stream for the simple fact of making more money.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I feel that we are successful because we listen to our customers about the designs they would like to see. We stick to our craft in celebrating everything Halloween and horror.
