Check Out Marissa Contreras’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Contreras.

Marissa Contreras

Hi Marissa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my Instagram when I was 14, just messing around with makeup tutorials and sharing all things beauty. Honestly, I had no idea it would turn into something bigger, but slowly I started gaining followers, and it was so exciting (and kinda wild at that age).

As I got deeper into makeup, I got certified and started doing clients in my room—everything from proms to weddings. It was such a busy and fun time, and I met some amazing people that I’m still friends with today. Then, modeling started to happen, and even though I was super nervous (no experience, who me?), I booked my first gig with a clothing brand in LA. And after that? More doors just kept opening.

I kept modeling through college while building my portfolio and within 4 years graduated from Cal State Fullerton with a degree in communications marketing. Since I was already working with brands on social, it just made sense to choose a major that aligned with what I was already doing. Now, I get to work in marketing for two Hispanic-owned brands, which is seriously so cool.

In 2020, I decided to hop on TikTok, and it’s been such a fun ride growing my following to almost 100K. I’m so grateful that social media is my “job” now—it’s my place to share what I believe in. With everything going on today, I think it’s important to speak up and be real. Being Latina in this space is an honor, and I want to keep using my voice to spread creativity, awareness, and, of course some good energy!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been far from smooth, but that’s what keeps things interesting! Balancing modeling, work, and school at the same time was a juggling act—I was basically running from classes to shoots and back again, fueled by way too much coffee. It was chaotic, but somehow, I managed to keep it all going.

Social media itself can be tough since there’s no guaranteed paycheck. It’s not like a 9-to-5 where you know what’s coming in every two weeks. Here, you’re constantly on your toes, creating and keeping up just to stay relevant.

And, of course, there’s the fun of dealing with people’s opinions! There’s always going to be someone with something negative to say, but I’ve learned it’s usually them just projecting. I don’t let it get to me—I’m all about focusing on the good vibes and the people who actually support me.

All in all, it’s been a wild ride. There are ups and downs, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a content creator and marketer, mixing creativity with strategy to help brands shine!

My journey started with makeup tutorials and evolved into a full-blown career, now focused on storytelling through TikToks, Reels, and influencer partnerships. I also genuinely enjoy my marketing career—it’s a lot of fun!

People connect with my content because it’s real and relatable. What you see is what you get. I always aim to strike a balance between creativity and honesty, whether it’s beauty, culture, or just sharing a laugh. My platforms often feel like a digital diary for the girlies! It’s really exciting to have cultivated a community who gets me, sees me, and relates to me. I feel like my community are all my amigas.

Being able to be in this world is always so unreal and I’m grateful for the chance to bring my perspective to the table and make a difference.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Social media can definitely feel like a risk sometimes—you’re putting yourself out there, and let’s be real, people can be mean. But honestly, if you’re even thinking about doing it, just go for it! Don’t waste time worrying about what people will say or think. People are always going to have something to say—good, bad, whatever—but at the end of the day, it’s your life and your happiness that matter.

When you’re being true to yourself and posting what makes you happy, the right people will show up and vibe with you. The others? Let them talk. You can’t control what they think, but you can totally control how you show up for yourself. Social media is your space to share, connect, and express whatever makes you feel good.

So take that risk! Post that pic, share that thought, do it for you. If it makes you happy, the rest will follow. Trust me, you won’t regret it!
