Today we’d like to introduce you to Makayla Godden.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
After graduating college in 2020, I had to make my own goals and dreams come true. As the odds were feeling like they were stacked against me trying to get a job right out of college during a global pandemic, I did what I could do in the moment: CREATE. I started creating one-of-one clothing by screen-printing in the backyard of my house in Clovis, CA. I started sharing my work on the internet and it quickly got me noticed. It landed my hand painted clothes on an HBO show and connected me to others in the fashion industry. From there, I recieved the opportunity to start working in the styling world where it has been fast-paced ever since.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
SMOOTH ROAD? Who EVER has an easy road?! I believe if we start life by telling the kids that achieving their goals is actually going to be VERY hard, it’ll help them more. Life in general really is about embracing the lows and using them to our advantage.
I do know that in the Fashion World, no one cares about your excuses. You either figure it out or get left behind. My mom gave me a book, “If You Have to Cry, Go Outside.”
*Some* of the struggles I’ve had to endure: car troubles before important work, having to work with people who have rough personalities, starting from the ground up and not having visibility at first. The list goes on. We MUST believe in ourselves before it all.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a fashion textiles designer, I created my own clothing brand “Mak Made It” which specializes in creating one-of-a-kind hand-painted wearable art. From customized jackets, bags, home decor…you name it, I’ll paint it. The message behind the art is to embrace our own uniqueness. We are all different for a reason. I am most proud of my strong will to keep going through all the trials and tribulations I have experienced.
What sets me apart? My positive outlook on life and my belief in not only myself but others. We really can achieve what we put our minds to. I do believe that God has written our stories and is guiding us where we belong, even if it’s not on our perfect timeline.
I also specialize in styling others. I see the importance in dressing in your absolute best and feeling your most confident self. This is a selfless job that I love to see others thrive when they have on their perfect outfit.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Embrace the struggle and know that if you don’t have things that are challenging, you aren’t working hard enough. It is important not to get STUCK in the struggle. Remember who you are, why you are here on this earth, and always stay connected to the bigger picture of life.
