Check Out Kim Nowinski’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Nowinski.

Hi Kim, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It’s shine and hopefully rise at 4a.m. for us. Getting the Cinnamon Roll Dough rising and other batters ready for fresh baked pastries from Coffee Cake, to scones, and our wildly popular Cinnamon Rolls.

But our story begins way before 4a.m. Our story started in 1990 when my MIL bought Good Neighbor Restaurant in Studio City, where she was a server. I wasn’t around back then, but my husband started working along side his parents right out of high school.

Chris and I met in ’98 and would frequent “Cathy’s Deli”, a favorite hole in the wall where we live in Santa Clarita. After years of owners coming and going, the timing was right in 2019 and we bought our favorite place, now called Neighbarista.

New business is always tough. Changing a beloved businesses name proved tougher. Locking our doors on our 6 month anniversary due to Covid was a nightmare. Chris and I have been members of this community for over 40 years. We honestly didn’t know if we would make it after Covid.

Joshir brings a Filipino flair and a creative touch to breakfast and Brunch. From Pork Belly Bennies, Chicken and Waffles or his family Sisig recipe. Chef is a force to be reconed with when it comes to slaying breakfast, Brunch, and lunch.

We strive to be community supporters without all the acolaids. We do it because it feels good for the soul, not because of a viral intent. Neighbarista is community. Neighbarista is family. Neighbarista is where you go for good food, amazing coffee, and bad ass music.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Covid was certainly not in our business plan. Navigating a new business, trying to build trust in the community, and adhere to Covid guidelines was definitely challenging. Straight in an egg crisis and ridiculous inflation has definitely made the light at the end barely a pin hole.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are known for our out of the box thinking when it comes to breakfast and Brunch. Our most popular item is our Horchata French Toast. Two this slices of Cinnamon Bread soaked in a Horchata Custard. I am most proud of our fresh baked pastries and pies. We are Santa Clarita’s pie Hotspot for 7 years now! We have worked really hard to bring super fresh and inspired dishes. Pair anything with our Intelligentsia Coffee and it’s winner, winner every time.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
We control all our social media and our posts. We love collaborating, especially for and with the underdogs. One of our favorite ways to collaborate is tagging fellow small businesses. Paying people for content is not sustainable for a small business, as the return is small comparatively to the expense. The best way to support us or any small business is REVIEWS, word of mouth, and share, share, share our posts.
