Today we’d like to introduce you to Kennedy Mullins.
Hi Kennedy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up in a small town near Nashville, TN, I had a big dream to become a model. I was bullied in high school for being “too tall”, “too skinny”, and “why are you wearing THAT?” On an up note, one of my guy friends at the time told me I reminded him of Taylor Hill, and that changed everything for me. She became my idol after that. I was like “Wait, my body type is kinda like hers!” I saw myself in her. It made me feel less weird and more comfortable with myself. I then started wearing heels to school and embracing my height. (Took long enough. lol) When I was 17, I flew to New York with my mom and studied at Coco Rocha’s Model Camp. I learned how to pose, different types of modeling, and how to build my modeling portfolio. From there, I used what I learned and soon got signed to my mother agency. I started working on building my book, making sure all my photos represented exactly what and who I wanted to work for. Over the years I have signed with modeling agencies in Los Angeles, Mexico, New York, Atlanta, Tennessee, and Chicago. I’ve collaborated with notable brands including Lids, Fanatics, Burt’s Bees, Panera, TJ Maxx, Hilton Hotels, and Ulta Beauty. My work has also been featured in People Magazine and Teen Vogue. I recently relocated to Los Angeles to be closer to industry opportunities and to further my career as a model and actor. As of January, I am proudly signed with a global management company for TV & Film.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of my biggest struggles was building my brand and finding what makes me, “me”. That is one of the most important things in this industry. Whether that’s your style, where you’re from, your passions, or hobbies, or a conglomeration of all of them. Building your brand is figuring out who YOU are. That’s something we’re all searching for. There are a lot of fair skin brunettes, so I had to set myself apart. I had long hair and then decided to cut it into a really short pixie to give me some edge. Then as of recent, I have grown it into a bob. One thing about me, I will try anything. No matter how challenging or scary. Even though something like hair might not seem like a big deal….it changes everything. That willingness to change something like my hair to improve my marketability is an attitude I want to have throughout my career because taking risks and pushing myself out of my comfort zone is very important to me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a model and I specialize in and get booked most often for beauty work, (makeup, skincare, etc.). I also have worked in commercial print, runway, and editorial. One of my favorite shows was a private runway event for TJ Maxx in New York. I had the pleasure of meeting Law Roach and got featured in Teen Vogue and People Magazine. What has also been really cool is the times I haven’t been aware of my work being released and people reach out to me. That is pretty cool! Something that sets me apart is that I will ALWAYS be there. You need me last minute? If I’m not booked on something else, I’ll be there in 15. I am known for being reliable and always showing up with great energy, and getting things DONE! It is RARE that I turn something down, unless it doesn’t match my long-term goals of making this industry my LIFE.
What were you like growing up?
I was a very anxious little girl, but also sweet, smart, and felt deeply for others. When I was young, my original dream was to be a teacher. We had a school room in our house dedicated to me teaching my little sister. Bulletin board, white board, teacher desk, school desks, etc. I LOVED IT. I played the flute from middle school into high school and participated in the marching band as well. During that time, I also performed in the theater program. One thing was constant, I was obsessed with being the best dressed in the whole school, almost as if there was a prize! I would get up three hours early before school just to get ready and my outfit was ALWAYS picked out the night before. Watching my mom do her makeup, sitting in the sink and looking in the mirror, was always inspiring to me and something that stuck with me throughout my life. I want my style and appearance to reflect who I am on the inside. My moods shift, just like my outfits or hairstyles, and that’s the beauty of it. Confidence, style, and beauty don’t have just one look…they have many.
