Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla-Christina Peay
Hi Kayla-Christina, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hello, my name is Kayla-Christina and I am 31 years old. I am a hairstylist, makeup artist, platform educator, and model from Philadelphia Pennsylvania located in Los Angeles California.
I have been doing hair since I was 8 years old. I started out by doing family and friends. Doing hair and Makeup was away for me and my mom to bond so I always enjoyed spending hours playing in hair and make up. Me and my mom would sit and sing and dye her hair. I would play in her make up, trying to imitate her or the women I seen on tv. My love for music and arts soon would collaborate with my love for beauty.
Around 11 years old i became a shop assistant and a local beauty salon ran by my mentor Linda Stewart. She was a member of my church and supported my love for cosmetology.
One thing that sticks in my head about my childhood and development that I have brought into my adulthood and career is that my dad always told me never to call someone ugly. I was raised by my father, the youngest. And those words hold so much significance in what I do, teach, and share with the world. Someone can act ugly or have an ugly trait but they can’t not be ugly. You never know why someone physically looks the way they do or why they look the way they do. all of our differences in our looks are what makes us beautiful. And I want to make people feel how beautiful they truly are inside and out.
I moved to La at age 25. I didn’t know how I was going to make it like every other person who moves to LA with the hope in a dream but what I didn’t know is that God had a bigger plan for me and my purpose. I came to La and didn’t even think of beauty! But my love for it showed. I found myself in places and environments that weren’t fitting for me, but those same places and environments that weren’t fitting for me fit for me. God was working on my behalf and I didn’t even know it. I was making connections that I didn’t know were connecting at the time.
We went through a global pandemic which the entire time I was able to continue to work because of my skills. Through that creativeness, persistent connections, and faith in God, I am now able to live my dream in the beauty industry.
I do set work all over the country with artist, musicians, comedians, actresses, actors, and socialites. For tv, print and film. I work with international clothing brands such as Zara. My work is advertised on billboards, websites, and digital marketing campaigns worldwide. I have been featured on music videos, project runway, love and hip hop, black ink, leading women’s defined podcast and more!
My work gives me great pleasure and purpose. I used to think that things were so out of reach from watching from the other side of the screen, but now I am here doing it all with the favor of God! And I get to pour good spirit into people as I grow. I am so grateful.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No road is ever smooth but if you want it bad enough, the bumps won’t make you quit. You got to wake up everyday hungry! Hungry for creativity hungry for work hungry for hustle! Remember that this is what you prayed for so maintain that. Even when it’s not great! The beauty industry can almost be a mean girls club. People don’t really want you until everybody wants you so just stay humble stay focused and build your clientele/family that fits you.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in natural beauty, mostly extentions. But anything that appears to be every day looks. If it’s a weave, what extensions? If it’s braids, knotless! If it’s make up, blended! The purpose of Makeup and hair extensions is to enhance beauty and or change the overall look. Whatever it is my job is to make it as seamless as possible.
Everyone’s idea of beauty is different. But mine is to enhance natural features. Nurture your natural hair skin and nails despite what styles you choose on or off set.
I am known best for the hairstyling in and my appearance in Hannah Monds ft. gangsta Boo- Big Momma video. We shot for 4 days in Tennessee. On set I was actually stabbed in the leg with shears while working, but the show must go on! I didn’t get stitched up until I was back in la. I am most proud of my dedication and preferences through out the entire process. I even got a lil cameo in the end crowing the queen. My job is so fun and exciting. I love it.
I am know for my amazing work, consistency, professionalism, and good spirit! I bring beauty to every set I touch with positive energy, the wisdom of God, the caring of a sister, the trust of a best friend, and the patience of a nun. Being a hairstylist is a clients safe space. And I provide just that.
How do you think about happiness?
Living in your purpose is what makes me happy. If you genuinely love what you do, love a person, place or thing. You take care of it. You share it. You embrace it.
