Today we’d like to introduce you to Julian Perez.
Hi Julian, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been into artistry since I was born. I was raised by two creative parents who helped shape the way I am today. I began acting in middle school with my first director, Lynn Schwimmer. She introduced the world of on stage entertainment to me and I owe her the world. She was incredibly inspirational and helpful to me. Fast forward to the year twenty twenty one and I started to learn how to record my own music on my own and now I have an amazing band including members Ambry Padilla and Joshik Sanchez. I am also still acting on stage with my current brilliant director Janet Miller at College of the Desert.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the major struggles I have noticed so far is being able to connect with people past face value. I think strangely since I put myself out there so much, I get back a weird reception and I’m treated differently because of it. I proudly make it a point to highlight both the latino and LGBTQ+ community because I myself am a Bisexual Latino, but being physically taken advantage by someone in the local queer community was not something I expected. Dealing with the affects of that and trying to push through hasn’t been easy. Still I aim to encourage and inspire others like me to continue, especially in this ever changing valley that I’m currently in.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
One of the things that I love to do is to blend both the music and aspects of theatrical performance together when I’m in the band. It really makes the music exciting and it makes people want to listen. Still I am an actor and musician and being able to do both has been so rewarding. I just finished acting in Revolution Stage Companies’ past season in Palm Springs with the generous Gary Powers. The band just finished its debut performance at Pappy & Harriet’s. That was definitely a highlight and I’m so insanely proud of the band. I can’t wait for everyone to see what else we have in store.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I’m still learning this myself but, finding a mentor is so important to give yourself examples of how to be successful. There are many local inspirations that I look up to and being able to work alongside them keeps me motivated. Also something important is to never be afraid to ask, the worst people can say is “no” so why be afraid of two little letters. You never know how far asking questions can get you, in any field.
