Check Out Julia Barreto’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Barreto.

Hi Julia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey started very early. According to my mom, before I could even speak words, I was already making melodies. When I started speaking, I would make songs about anything — the birds, the little ants passing by, and everything in between. At only 3 years old, I asked for an opportunity to sing at church, and that was the beginning.
I spent my whole childhood singing in churches and at church events all over. I started writing poems at 6 and realized they had rhythm, so they became songs. At 8, I wrote my first little tune, and at 11, I started writing in English. As a determined little dreamer, I’d always say that one day I was going to move to the US to pursue music. At 8, I sat both my parents down to let them know it was going to happen. I didn’t know when or how, but eventually it would — and so it did.
At 17 years old, I packed my bags and moved to Florida. Knowing there was a big Brazilian community there, I felt my parents would be more at peace, knowing I’d have support if something happened. After a quick year there, completing my last year of high school, I moved to New York to study Audio Engineering and Music Production. I’m passionate about understanding the hows and whys of things. I graduated from the Institute of Audio Research and started my journey as an audio engineer, doing live sound, interning at a studio, and slowly developing Juliah.
After nearly five years between New York and New Jersey, in late 2020 I went back to Brazil to develop and establish my artist career there first — building a strong network so I could return to L.A. and start building here with the connections I had made. Since late 2022, I’ve been here in Los Angeles, developing, growing, and understanding how Juliah can fully express her mission and purpose through music.
My purpose is to touch souls, bringing a wave of peace and drawing people closer to their divine realm so they can experience the endless love and everlasting sensation of peace that a strong spiritual connection offers. My goal is to inspire people to seek elevation of the mind, body, and soul — and to show that a path led by love is the most powerful path we can choose in this experience called life.
These past nearly four years in L.A. have been incredibly meaningful for my personal growth. I’ve focused on healing in areas of my life that needed attention, reached deeper parts of myself that are essential to my music, and learned so much about the industry from incredibly talented people.
I’m still developing Juliah and refining the ultimate sound that fully represents her: preserving the soul of R&B, blending in subtle lo-fi hip-hop elements, and infusing it all with Brazilian flavors. My latest singles and English debuts, “L.A to São Paulo” and “Back to My Arms (Fín),” reflect this era of growth, peace, self-love, and the musical journey I’ve been on over the last few years.
I’m currently writing and exploring to find the most authentic way to express my message through music, and I can’t wait to start releasing again. Every now and then I perform around L.A. — and being on stage, where I get to share a piece of my soul and transport people to another space, is my favorite place to be. It feels like my natural habitat.
Music was never a choice for me; it’s a need. I’m turning 28 in April, I now have to focus on building some financial stability so I can create without stress. My vision is big, and I want to execute it with the greatness it deserves.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s both yes and no.

No, because as artists we have to learn to juggle life and art. In Brazil, I was able to focus almost entirely on music — a time when I truly thrived. But in the US, I don’t have a strong financial foundation or support system, so I have to work jobs that are often time- and energy-consuming. That inevitably takes away from my music.
Moving here so young to pursue this passion also meant giving up a lot: the comfort of home, the constant presence of my family, and the safety net I once had. I’ve had to handle many difficult situations completely on my own. Thankfully, I was built strong. From the age of 10, life back home became very hard, and I had to dive deep into who I truly am. That experience forced me to build a solid inner foundation so I would never lose myself and could always keep my soul intact.
Yes, because I wouldn’t choose to live any of it differently. The knowledge and growth I’ve gained from everything I’ve been through are priceless. Music is worth every painful moment I’ve experienced.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
That’s a tricky question because I do wear many hats.

I’m an audio engineer, working in both live sound and studio settings. At the same time, I also handle side hustles — currently working at a Brazilian açaí place in NoHo and a sandwich shop. I’ve been in the music industry since I was 20, and these experiences have helped me develop important sides of myself that I truly need as an artist.

Right now, I’m also building a business with my sister. We’re bringing a piece of Brazil to the US very soon, and I’m really excited to embrace this entrepreneurial side of me — the businesswoman I’ve always carried inside.

I’m most proud of my resilience, my determination, and my ability to never let anything pull me away from my true purpose.

What sets me apart is my essence and energy — the way it comes through in my voice and tone — along with my purity and the strong spiritual connection I have with God.

How do you think about happiness?
Singing. Creating. Helping others. Family. Being in nature. Cute animals.

All of these are part of my essence.

Singing allows me to transcend. Creating feels like bursting into colors — it’s incredibly satisfying to watch something that existed only in my head materialize, especially when collaborating with others and seeing different visions come together to create something unique.

Helping others and bringing joy into someone’s life gives me a feeling I can’t even explain — maybe “ecstasy” is the closest word. My family is my foundation; they constantly recharge and fuel me with a love that feels out of this world. Being in nature is like walking side by side with God. And cute animals? Well… because they’re cute, haha.
