Today we’d like to introduce you to Joza Joza.ink.
Hi Joza, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Neos Kosmos (Greece, Athens). My artistic journey began at a young age, around 4.5 to 5 years old, when I discovered my passion for painting. The pivotal moment occurred as I observed my younger sister’s desire to emulate Ariel, the little mermaid. With unwavering confidence, I declared, “I can make you look like Ariel!” Armed with markers, I embarked on a creative venture that resulted in a humorous and unexpected transformation, evoking laughter and tears from everyone present. Instead of deterring me, this incident ignited my passion for artistic expression. This childhood experience laid the groundwork for my future as a professional tattoo artist.
Little did I know that my artistic pursuits would intertwine with my life story, leading me on a path of creative fulfillment. As a young adolescent, I eagerly embraced the tattoo culture, deciding to get my first tattoo at the age of 15-16. Reflecting on that moment, I recall the excitement and significance attached to the experience. Although I knew I wanted to pursue a career in the creative realm, I studied and earned my degree to become a dentist technician. I quickly realized that this profession was not aligned with who I am at my core. I then decided to transfer to the Fine Arts School of Florina. Despite not completing my studies there, I became a cultural agent, exploring photography, video, and painting before finding my calling in the realm of tattoos.
In an era where getting a tattoo carried unique weight and challenges, I navigated the process with determination, convincing studio owners to create my first tattoo. This formative experience became a cornerstone in shaping my artistic identity.
My journey is a testament to the transformative power of art, illustrating how early creative endeavors and significant life choices can lead to unexpected and fulfilling paths. From childhood painting adventures to navigating the cultural tapestry of tattoos, my story reflects the profound impact art has had on shaping my identity and connecting me to the shared human experience.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For the past seven years, I’ve been on a constant journey, traveling the world to bring my art to life. My home, weighing 22 kilograms, reflects the weight of my suitcase. England, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, Italy, Luxembourg, Serbia, Romania, Switzerland – these are just a few of the places I’ve traversed without establishing a fixed base.
As Joza, I am a tattoo artist who dared to step beyond my comfort zone, crafting a life that is multi-faceted and vibrant. The key ingredients? Visual arts, tattoos, and painting. Like a modern nomad, I continue on this endless journey of self-expression.
At one point, I decided to switch cities every week, and as a result, I created a routine or tradition to be at an airport or a station every Sunday to change locations. I started in a German city, Dresden, then I went to Berlin, from Berlin to Hamburg, from Hamburg to Arnhem in Holland, from Arnhem to Amsterdam, Amsterdam to London, then from London to Malta for a tattoo convention, where I was awarded “Best Tattoo of the Day.” After that, I went to Austria and then back to Amsterdam, and at some point, I found myself in Paris. I’ve even left my mark through tattoos in a high-security prison in the Netherlands.
Fast forward to now, I am still reaching people from all over the world with my art while I am based in Los Angeles. I moved here 7 months ago, and I am still getting acquainted with being in one place for a long period of time. It has definitely been a huge change of pace for me, but I am grateful for the opportunity to experience new things and grow as an artist and a person.
The path is unique for each one of us. Despite the sacrifices we have to make and the challenges we must face, it’s crucial to follow our dreams. Our journey is a canvas of endless possibilities, painted with the colors of perseverance, passion, and self-discovery. Embrace the challenges, for they shape the remarkable story of your life. Every step, whether forward or backward, contributes to the masterpiece that reflects your individuality. In this journey, remember that obstacles are steppingstones, and each moment is an opportunity for growth. Trust the process, believe in your vision, and let the journey unfold, for it is in the pursuit of our dreams that we truly find ourselves.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My work is not just a job; it’s a unique and essential part of who I am. The tattoo designs I create are meticulously crafted to seamlessly fit the body’s contours and, more importantly, to resonate with the individual wearing them. I have a particular affinity for freehand work, using brushstrokes and marks to add a personal touch to each piece. My designs are meant to embrace the body, creating a unique and personal connection.
What sets me apart is my distinctive personal style, which defies categorization. It’s abstract, unique, and deeply personal to me. Every design is one of a kind, and no two tattoos are alike. I’ve coined this style as “scratch,” and my slogan encapsulates the essence: “Give me trust, give you scratch.”
One of my proudest achievements is the trust I’ve built with my clients. They have traveled far and wide to have my art adorn their bodies, creating a mark that goes beyond the physical. This trust has allowed me to make connections with people from all corners of the world. Even now, based in the US, clients continue to travel from Europe to continue existing designs and embark on new projects with me. It’s a testament to the universal language of art and the bonds formed through my craft.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up in Athens, Greece, a vibrant tapestry of experiences shaped my early years. From a young age, I discovered a knack for building things, showcasing a surprising skill set that left my family astonished. At just 5 years old, I was already crafting chairs, tables, and even a whole treehouse out of wood. The disbelief from my family only fueled my determination to explore my creative inclinations.
My childhood was infused with a passion for outdoor activities, particularly skateboarding, BMX, and mountain biking. Athens, with its diverse urban and natural landscapes, provided the perfect backdrop for these pursuits. The city’s dynamic energy and the proximity to the sea played a significant role in nurturing these interests. Growing up next to the sea became an integral part of my identity, influencing not only my hobbies but also shaping who I am.
As I navigated the streets of Athens on my skateboard the city became a canvas for self-expression and exploration. The juxtaposition of ancient history and modern urban life provided a rich backdrop for my childhood adventures. In addition to building things, I also explored my talents with street art, further adding layers to my creative journey.
Looking back, my experiences growing up in Athens have left an indelible mark on my identity. The combination of creative craftsmanship, a passion for outdoor activities, and a profound connection to the sea has shaped not only my childhood memories but also the person I am today.
