Today we’d like to introduce you to Johanna Chunn.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I knew at an early age that I had a love for the arts. I was born and raised about 20 minutes outside of Nashville, TN in a small town called Smyrna. I enjoyed dancing and tumbling as a kid and would admire the kids on Disney Channel.
I started off doing small plays at my church in high school and went on to major in Theatre at Middle Tennessee State University. I ended up auditioning and becoming a character performer for Walt Disney World while in college. That experience changed the trajectory of my life. I changed my major from Accounting to Theatre and graduated with my Bachelor of Arts degree. I started training and auditioning in Nashville until I decided to make the big move to Los Angeles last year.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not. I think it takes a lot of determination when you are trying to breakthrough into any area in entertainment, especially acting. It’s very competitive and if you’re not grounded and confident in yourself you can become discouraged. There have been times I’ve thought to myself why am I still pursuing this? I can be doing something easier or more “traditional”. My faith in God has kept me during seasons of doubt.
Also, its not like adult responsibilities stop because you’re pursuing something, oftentimes you have to have a double life or way of making a living while still pursuing your passion and that in itself can be exhausting if you don’t have any support financially. I’m so grateful God has blessed me to be able to balance everything.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
This might sound cliche but I think as an actress the thing I’m most proud of is stepping out in faith and moving to Los Angeles by myself. Of course I’m proud of the projects I’ve been in and graduating with my Theatre degree as well.
I think my athleticism is what sets me apart. I’ve always kind of naturally been good at most things physical. I think growing up cheerleading was a really good foundation for everything else I’m interested in learning like stage combat.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think my determination, bubbly personality, willingness to learn new things, and my faith have been the most important. I don’t mind being a student, its what I think has helped me grow the most. I feel like professionalism is really important in this industry as well. Its all about relationships and communication.
