Today we’d like to introduce you to Iris Ochoa (Murderdatt).

Iris Ochoa (Murderdatt)

Hi Iris, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began my journey developing a fondness for journaling, which eventually led me to explore the realm of crafting short poems at ages 11-13. By the time I reached the age of 15, a significant moment occurred that would shape my artistic journey. While spending time in my room with my younger brother, I started free-styling, and his positive response served as motivation for me to start writing songs. During my high school years, I sharpened my freestyling skills by collaborating with a classmate who shared a passion for rap and freestyle. Together, we would engage in friendly competition, pushing each other to explore the limits of our creativity.

When I turned 18, I made a crucial decision to attend a military school/ high school to complete my education. It was a residential school where discipline coexisted under one roof. Living in a different environment for six months away from home and my family allowed me to explore my creativity further and dive deeper into my passion for writing.

During my time at the school, I found solace in my notebook. It became my sanctuary, a place where I could pour out my thoughts, emotions, and dreams deeper than I had ever done before. I would spend countless hours scribbling words onto those blank pages, attempting to capture the essence of my experiences.

While I was staying there, a talent show took place, and I made the choice to go up and perform one of my rap songs. After leaving that place upon graduation, I felt a sense of determination to pursue my passion even further. I started to put myself out there on social media, uploading freestyles and songs that I had written. I started receiving opportunities to perform at events, but I didn’t feel ready to do so. Eventually, as time went by I began attending hip-hop shows. And during one of those shows, a friend of mine at the time called me out on stage to freestyle, and at that moment, I realized I could not decline the opportunity.

The more I began to upload songs that I would write, I started to get a lot of recognition and received a lot of support from people I didn’t know, and it was encouraging to see individuals reach out to me even more. Eventually, after that, I had the courage and took the chances that were presented to me, and I started performing at different shows in Los Angeles.

I am an independent artist growing and thriving. I am known as Murderdatt. Born in Huntington Park, raised in Maywood, South East LA area. That name came upon me from a really close friend of mine. He is a graffiti artist and a graphic designer.

One day we were hanging out, and I was encouraged a lot by his art, so I would ask him, “What’s a good name I can write” and as we tried to put different names together, ‘Murderdatt’ was my favorite.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ultimately, while my journey may have been filled with unavoidable bumps, I believe I was destined to navigate a hardship-filled path. Yet, despite the countless challenges, trials, and tribulations I have endured, I wholeheartedly appreciate and embrace the bumps along the way, as they have played an instrumental role in shaping the resilient person I am today. It is undeniable that my childhood and adolescence experiences have given me the motivation within to strive for a better life. Witnessing abuse within my own household for a prolonged period of time had made me an angry person. But once I decided to really find myself and who I want to be, it made me stronger and more determined to improve myself. Although there were times I felt like I couldn’t get out of the dark hole due to a lot of the negativity that was around me, I always made sure to sit with myself and find solutions on how to not absorb the energy to keep my aura pure. Throughout the years of meeting new people and growing a bond with some, I encountered way too many people who had ill intentions and would attempt to steer me down an unfruitful path. I used to struggle with letting some people go because of how much love I had for them. But I am at a time in my life where I’m so quick to cut someone off when their behavior gets funny if you know what I mean.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
In addition to my passion for making music, I have been fortunate enough to work at a unique bakery. Throughout my work history, I can confidently say that this particular job has enabled me to grow and flourish in various aspects of my life. The bakery job has undoubtedly been a transformative experience for me. It has allowed me to explore and nurture my untapped potential, constantly pushing the boundaries of my creative capabilities. This job has served as a platform for personal growth, teaching me invaluable skills that extend far beyond the workplace. Over the time that I have been there, I have earned the position to be able to bring marketing ideas and create merchandise for the brand. I am beyond grateful for this opportunity, and I look forward to continuing to excel in both my musical pursuits and my role at this bakery.

Aside from all of this, a lot of people know I have a Sulcata tortoise; I’ve had him for about 15 years. And I call him my child. I love sunbathing with him and watching him eat; it’s quite satisfying. Over the years, I was able to link with a graphic designer to create merch for myself and a cartoon character artwork of him. Plenty of people adore him just as much as I do and constantly ask for more content of him. And I absolutely love that. Soon, he will be featuring in a music video with me called “Drippin’ Gold’.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I would strongly recommend each and every person to fearlessly pursue after your deepest desires in this journey of life. Take the time to identify your goals and write down strategies to achieve them.

The next step is to create a plan of action. Strategic thinking and organization are key elements in bringing your dreams to life. By learning the art of time management and dedication, you’ll gain a lot of determination.

The best thing you can learn is to not let your emotions get in the way of decision-making. Don’t ever let others get a reaction out of you, especially a negative one.

Having self-discipline is very important in the game if you want to make it far! It is also crucial to disregard people, whether it’s family, friends, or people you don’t even know, cast doubt, or attempt to discourage your ambitions.

Not everyone needs to know your goals and plans. Remember, the people you choose to surround yourself with will have an impact on the path you will take. Choose to be around like-minded individuals.
