Today we’d like to introduce you to GAY Z.
Hi GAY, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Carli Robe, aka Comedian Gay-Z. I am originally from Cleveland, Ohio. The first time I told a joke in front of a large crowd was when I was eight years old. I had a Christmas speech where I had to dress up as a Christmas tree. I wore all green and wrapped myself in Christmas lights in front of the crowd, the crowd was laughing from my silence as I wrapped myself in the Christmas lights; once I finished wrapping myself in the lights, I plugged them in, grabbed the microphone and my opening line was, “I am a Christmas tree!” The response that I received from the crowd of 80-plus church members was electric. The crowd roared with laughter and from that point on I knew I wanted to be a comedian. I started my professional comedy career on Wednesday, November 5, 2014, at the Cleveland Improv. I signed up for the comedy classes a few weeks prior to my performance. I invited everyone from my job, as well as several family members and friends. Over 150 people showed up in support of me. I was a nervous wreck. I got on stage and told jokes about my job as a healthcare worker. The crowd loved it, and the rest is history. My style of comedy relates to all forms of life. I believe that my sole mission in life is to heal the world through comedy. My production company is called Rich Comedic Rockstar Productions. I am currently in the process of writing multiple television shows and box office movies. I have a sketch comedy show in the works and I’m also working on a few short film projects. The fact that I’m a person who was born both genders I can relate to both men and women. I am also Autistic, so my comedy is childlike humor. I love my job as a full-time comedian and I’m blessed to be able to chase after my dreams.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
People ask me all the time if working in the entertainment industry has been a smooth and easy road and every single time, I am asked my answer is always: “absolutely not!” I feel the hardest challenge to overcome in the entertainment industry is your colleagues being jealous of your progression. I’ve had people I previously worked with feel I’m competing with them because of my drive and ambition. I had former coworkers make up lies to defame my character so that I would be overlooked for certain career opportunities. I have had people lie about me in a professional sense as I am difficult to work with. All of these lies are furthest from the truth. I love working with other people and anyone who says otherwise is most likely a person who is upset that they betrayed me over money. I knew a long time ago that God wanted me to put smiles on people’s faces with the stories I tell on stage. My ambition is not a knock to other entertainers but an ode to The Most High God’s favor over my life! I am merely showing God that I appreciate Him for bringing me so far in life. I must work hard to prove to God that He made the right choice for picking me to deliver His message through comedy.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an entertainer and writer; however, I got my start in entertainment through comedy. My stage name is GAY-Z, shout-out to Jay-Z, who stole my swag years ago, just ask Dame Dash why Michael Jackson pulled up on them at Summer Jam 2001. My material on stage is diverse because I’ve lived in every area of Cleveland, Ohio. From the nicest suburbs to the not so nice places of the city. I moved to Los Angeles in 2023, and I fit right in because I consider Cleveland, Ohio the “Cold LA.” I graduated from The Ohio State University in 2008, where I obtained a Bachelor of Science in Education and a minor in African American and African Studies. I also earned an associate’s degree in physical Therapist Assistant Technology from Cuyahoga Community College. My different experiences in society have led me to be able to have endless material in most matters of life. I’m most proud of being able to perform alongside most of the comedians that I grew up watching on television shows like Def Comedy Jam, In Living Color, and BET’s Comicview. The thing that sets me apart from other comedians is that I was born both man and woman who no longer has their man parts, but I have dated women my entire life. So technically I still identity as a heterosexual man or a lesbian. My jokes are about both sides of relationships between men and women. I can identify with both genders, and I understand the struggles of human interactions. I hope that my material can bridge the gap between men and women’s differences, so that we can learn how to love each other properly and eventually make this world a more loving place.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Here’s the thing about taking risks, the only way I believe that you can truly take risks is to TELL THE TRUTH! We now live in a society where people have become threatened by hearing the truth. Social media has made it easy for people to live a life full of LIES. Recently a man went viral for posing as an NFL player and scamming women out of money because he was seen on social media wearing full NFL gear. Today’s society is so focused on impressing other people instead of impressing the Creator of the Universe with their acts of love and kindness. In a world where love is lacking it’s time we take the risk to putting more love into the atmosphere. The most recent risks I have taken is I am currently fighting a court case against the Bloods and Crips gangs in Cleveland, Ohio. I have been stalked, harassed and exploited by these two organizations. I have tried to show the next generation that it is okay to speak up for yourself if you are being harmed in any way. You are not a snitch for talking about what people are doing to you if it is causing you harm. SPEAK UP FOR YOURSELF AND DON’T LET ANYONE TELL YOU ARE WRONG FOR STANDING UP FOR YOURSELF!!!
