Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriel Medina
Gabriel , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always been drawn to art. Since I was a kid, I’ve been fascinated by the various colors, sounds, and expressions within the artistic realm. I remember spending time drawing, painting, making origami, playing in my school’s marching band, exploring film, and of course, photography. I initially picked up photography as a new creative outlet to help me navigate my high school and early college years. Little did I know, it would lead to traveling across North America, creating content for incredible musical artists and vocalists, photographing models, and even working with reality TV stars. I’ve had the honor of shooting EP and album covers for some artists as well. Given that I once doubted whether I was ‘good enough’ to pursue anything in the creative field, it’s truly humbling and beyond anything I imagined that my work has been recognized at all. I feel incredibly blessed.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We’ve all experienced both thorns and roses in our careers, so I would be lying if I said it’s all been glitter and butterflies. I began my photography journey in high school while juggling being a student, working a part-time job, and trying to find my artistic style—and ultimately, myself. I struggled with depression and anxiety back then, and I still navigate those challenges as an adult. Because of this, my art became my most authentic form of self-care. It pushed me to meet people, build connections, create structure, and step into uncomfortable situations that helped me grow into the person I am today. And I’m proud of who that person is.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Honestly, my day-to-day life isn’t all that exciting. I work at a veterinary hospital here in Santa Barbara, spend time cooking, socializing, working out, playing with my dog, or being with loved ones. This relatively simple routine offers a nice contrast to the variety of experiences and jobs I’ve had, and those I have ahead of me.
In terms of photography, I’m best known for my portrait work and editing style. While I’ve had the privilege of photographing incredible people, weddings, and events, what I’m most proud of are the connections I’ve made along the way. Many of my closest friends and colleagues came into my life through my art. While I truly appreciate the recognition for my work, it’s the support, guidance, and relationships I’ve built that mean the most to me.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
In photography, luck plays a surprisingly significant role, both good and bad. While planning and skill are essential, capturing the perfect shot often relies on unpredictable factors—like lighting, spontaneous moments, or unexpected opportunities. There’s a fine line between luck and bad luck; a sudden cloud could ruin a sunset shot, or it could cast the perfect shadow. Navigating this uncertainty has taught me that while I can’t control every variable, being adaptable and ready for the unexpected often turns potential bad luck into moments of serendipity, enhancing both my art and my business.
