Today we’d like to introduce you to Fly Ty.
Hi Fly, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My name is Tariq, aka Fly Ty. I was born & raised in Flatbush, Brooklyn, NYC… At 17, I always had style and a passion for looking good and fashionable, but I always wanted to fit in as a kid. My mom’s always told me over and over to stop trying to look like the next person and be yourself, but it would always be one ear out the other. Then, as time went on, designing clothes peeked my interest as I was undecided at the time while pursuing my associate’s degree in college. So, I winded up investing in my first sewing machine and customizing my own jackets and pants, which would often gain attention in the streets of NYC while rocking my own brand while looking drippy… People would often approach me asking where I got certain pieces I’d have on custom done by me, and then eventually, I’d wind up potentially getting customers of my work… As time moved on, and I was around my mid to late 20s with me working more jobs and no longer having enough time to design clothes anymore, I winded see people asking me how can they put they own looks together and wear certain brands without looking like they overly rocking too much brands looking gordy… so when I sat back and thought bout it I’m like since designing I no longer got time for why not just have myself be a stylist and work with people one on one since I always like to put looks together as a passion to make myself stand out amongst the rest in events, red carpets and, etc… I gained lots of social media attention off of my image from not only people like myself but of even celebrities then eventually id start to dress them up and even style one for NYFW since many celebs loves to attend New York fashion week…
As I built up my brand within the fashion industry I’ve learn from a youngin you can’t be homophobic, antisocial, egotistical, and in competition with other designers and stylists…because when you look at the most successful brands, they was the total opposite of everything I just mention and did major collaborations and most importantly build good relationships with those who had a similar vision to take things to the next level since fashion always evolves and history always repeats itself… so once I got to wear I’m at today I winded up going from the outside looking in like I wanna be known and like a dapper, dan to now being recognized as one of the flyests from youngsters to me speaking on huge industry fashion panels, to talking to big classes at universities and being a BIG inspiration to others who comes to me for advice & knowledge.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road for me. Had I not hung around friends who were successful in the fashion industry and I had not been a comedy club promoter back then, to be honest, I wouldn’t be where I am today… being a promoter really opened up my networking skills when I use to be the most quiet shy person people know; now, I’m a whole public figure lol
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in providing unique looks for people or celebrities for music videos, weddings, or other special occasions… I’m most proud of all my accomplishments over the past decade and the people I’ve got the opportunity to network with and personally work with. What sets me apart from others is me wanting to work with everyone where I come from a city where everyone is in a race to win before you. That’s what makes NYC such a competitive city; people want to help you but are afraid you may wind up making it before you. So that’s why what sets me apart is I never looked for a handout. I personally would gain my own knowledge from doing lots of research and being a huge observer amongst my peers and how they juggled being successful in the fashion industry.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Always walk in your purpose and know someone’s always watching you, so remain focused.
