Today we’d like to introduce you to Flannery Seager-Strode.
Hi Flannery , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started Glass Kandy in the pandemic as a means of reconnecting with myself. I wanted to rediscover my childhood sense of imagination through art, and picked up jewelry making again after taking a long hiatus. I sourced vintage glass beads from local beads shops, and started making jewelry on a small instagram, selling to friends and mutuals around Los Angeles. What started as a hobby and way to fill time in quarantine turned into something I could have never anticipated. My instargam grew to thousands of followers in a matter of weeks, and the orders started coming in from around the world. Glass Kandy took off, and I was soon running a small independent brand on Instagram! Soon, celebrity stylists starting reaching out to me to create custom looks for music videos and performances. I’ve been able to work with artists like Doja Cat, Doechii, Tyla, and many more to create custom looks.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m grateful for every aspect of my journey. You have to ride the waves of trends and the economy. There are always ups and downs, but the most important thing for me is to maintain any kind of creative practice regardless of the consumer, of whether I think someone will buy a piece or not. Because at the end of the day, it’s just me connecting with myself and making art. Having people like my work is the biggest blessing, but I always have to enjoy the process just as much as the end result.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a multidisciplinary creative who specializes in junk style jewelry with a 2000s edge. Glass Kandy was born out of a desire to create jewelry that evoked raver Kandy from the late 90s and early 2000s into something more durable and less ephemeral, and more grown up. I was inspired by Kandy, junk jewelry from the 60s, and my own childhood beading practice to make a small brand and see where it took me. I am so proud of bringing my vision to life and getting able to create custom works for stars to wear on stage and the red carpet.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Getting to create, seeing nature, and animals make me the happiest. I think those are all of the things that make life worth living. We are here to make stuff, to connect with the natural world around us!
