Check Out Elizabeth Becker’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Becker

Hi Elizabeth, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Back in Cincinnati, Ohio, I started dancing and acting as a child. Music wasn’t really on my mind. As I grew older I started joining voice and acting lessons because all my friends did it too – and I eventually started to really love singing (musical theater and classical). One thing I have always loved though are movies. I had no idea I’d ever major in Film Scoring in school or even want to write music for media, but movies/television have always been an inspiration to me, especially animation. As I got into middle school and high school, I began a love of composition and writing songs. I wanted to be a singer songwriter for a brief period of time (thanks Halsey) but I soon learned this wasn’t my main passion. Instrumental music, soundtracks, and musicals still had a hold on me. I initially had an idea to go to college for animation, but I realized what I loved about animation is the music that goes along with it. Avatar the Last Airbender, How To Train Your Dragon, Tangled, Spirited Away and so many more films made an impression on me. I completed the Boston Conservatory of Music at Berklee’s two week composition intensive to start building my portfolio, and in 2019 I got accepted into Berklee College of Music. It was tough, and I felt like a fish out of water during many moments, but ultimately I graduated with a Film and Media Scoring degree, with a double major in Contemporary Writing and Production, in August 2023. The school opened my eyes to all the different roles in making music for media. While classes were demanding, the faculty and my peers were supportive and motivational. After walking in May 2023, I finished my course work over the summer, and I moved to Los Angeles in September. The quick turn around was strange and helpful at the same time. Post-college life is another challenge in itself, beyond the job hunting part. I am very grateful that my parents have supported me in the next steps, because September through December, I felt lost while finding a job and beginning my life without the support of a class schedule. In January, I was hired as a composer assistant at Bleeding Fingers Music. For the past 7 months, I have learned so much. It was tough being thrown into a big project right after graduating, but the environment and the composer I work for, Laurentia Editha, have been supportive and great mentors. Now, I feel I have finally landed on my own two feet and cannot wait to start another project as an assistant.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Anxiety has been my biggest motivator but also my biggest struggle in terms of challenges. While it has helped me turned projects in on time and stay connected with everyone, it used to get in the way. Fortunately, I have gotten help through therapy, but before I received that my senior year of college, life with anxiety was hard. It can still get in the way in the industry: comparing yourself to others, feeling like compositions aren’t good enough, etc. But, this is why I make sure to balance my life with a good support system, because in college and in high school, I never tried to seek help. Now, I understand the importance it is to have a balanced work and social life. I think post-college is when people start learning this, as having a consistent schedule starting a career can get harder without the structure of classes.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a composer and an arranger. I work as a composer assistant at Bleeding Fingers Music part-time and freelance on the side. Recently, I finished an arranging gig for the artist RAIGN, and arranged a string quartet and 2 brass instruments for 3 songs that were recorded at The Village Studios. My main focus is on animation, film musicals, and documentaries. I love exploring different genres of film and can’t wait to expand my portfolio.

How do you think about happiness?
The people in my life. My parents, my boyfriend, my co-workers, and my friends. I love music, but nothing makes me happier than getting to spend quality time with the people in my life. A lot of friends went to Berklee as well, and are in the same Film Scoring field as me, so we get to talk about soundtracks or just go to the beach. It’s the best of both worlds. I also try to keep hobbies, like art and reading, to keep a balance in my life.
