Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlos Murguía.
Hi Carlos, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born into a family of musicians in Mexico City, Mexico. Both my parents were musicians. My dad played classical piano and my mom played piano/guitar and sang. Two of my older brothers became professional musicians as well. A drummer and a guitar player.
I studied classical piano for five years since the age of seven and by the time I was 15 in 1974, I joined my brothers’ band. Little did I know that they had already worked out a contract to come to the USA to play at Walt Disneyworld in FL with the band. So three months after my debut as a 15-year-old musician I was playing at The Tomorrowland Terrace in Disneyworld and three months later at Disneyland, CA. A gig which lasted two years. Went back to Mexico but six years later I missed the US too much so I left my brothers’ band, put another band together, auditioned for Disney again and got a three months contract again! One that would turn into an eight year gig becoming the House dance band.
In 1990 the band broke up and I started doing session work as a singer mostly. Little by little it became more and more and I started doing pretty high-profile records for big-name artists. By the year 2000, I started touring as a keyboard player/ singer with recording artist Chick Negron formerly of Three Dog Night and the session work got even better. Since then I toured all the way till 2018 with different artists and have been doing extensive studio work as well, including commercials, movies, TV and records. Many of which I’m sure you know.
Today I mainly do session work and production.
I have a home recording studio and I’ve had the fortune of being called to sing in movies like Coco and Encanto just to mention a couple.
Sometimes doing it from home (which I love) and sometimes going to big sound studios to record on location.
Next year it’ll be 50 years of me being a professional musician/singer. Yikes!
That’s my story in a nutshell.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a crazy road. Some of the struggles are personal ones like a divorce and not being able to be with my kids at the time.
Other challenges are simply the way the industry changes.
Sometimes it’s great, sometimes it’s bad and sometimes it’s worse!
But being a musician is not something I chose…music chose me!
And it’s very, very satisfying but it’s super demanding and also can be very hard on you.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a musician, singer, songwriter, and producer. I specialize in vocal production.
Being fully bilingual has put me on a niche that has worked out great for me for obvious reasons.
I also play the Hammond B3 organ which is a dying art.
I think THAT sets me apart because it’s a vintage instrument that not just any keyboard player knows how to play.
I recently put out an independent record with 11 original songs and I am very proud of it.
It’s called “Carlos Murguia Wake Up”.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My family definitely has been a huge influence on me being that there’s being musicians in my family for generations. Especially my two older brothers who had me join their band. I learned SOOO much from them.
My current wife has been my rock for over 30 years, I don’t know if I’d be where I am without her.
