Today we’d like to introduce you to Bradley Jacobson.
Hi Bradley , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in Wisconsin but have always wanted to be in Los Angeles. Even if I didn’t know where or how I was bound and determined to get there. I wanted to be a rock star or a writer about rock stars so of course so I knew West Hollywood was probably the place for me. It took a while to get some things going and I took everything the city had to offer. I worked for years in high end furniture in the Pacific Design Center while I hung out with my musician friends and we made music together and did shows together all over LA. I eventually went back to school at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood so I could get an Audio Engineering degree and learn how to record music better.
I met Devin Tait and the rest of the band Shitting Glitter and have always worked with him and the band. We did shows together and I produced a number of Devin’s songs. I put out a number of independent albums with my moniker Swivek and eventually my own name Bradley Jacobson. I even interned for a while in the Valley at a sound studio. Then I became more of a house husband but still have a small home studio and have been working on new music while producing and recording other artists.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Luckily I’ve met so many great people who inspired me and helped me do shows and record music. I’m still a struggling artist but because of other personal ideals I’ve been able to manage a small career and a huge personal life in West Hollywood with my husband of 25 years.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have a degree in audio engineering and work on music when the opportunity rises. I have worked with local musicians and my own music. I have produced and interned in small studios.
I have to say I’m most proud of my own music that I’ve been able to craft and create. Though working with others has been amazing.
I am really a jack of all trades taking any opportunity that comes my way. I worked on a movie where I was one of the casting agents and then the script supervisor with a small acting part. That is one of my most proud moments. I loved every moment of it and it was so LA.
Working on a song or a film and then seeing it through to the end and watching/listening to the end result is always amazing and knowing I had a part in it is always a thrill.
Because I’m always broadening my skills I think I have an advantage that I can do just about anything and everything is exciting to me so it makes me work harder to work on the project.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I have to admit I’ve become a little more complacent in my older years as I have a pretty steady home life but I’ve taken many risks in my life. I did the ultimate LA story by hopping on a Greyhound bus in 2000 with $50, a suitcase and sleeping bag and moved to Los Feliz. I stayed with a friend in his bachelor apartment. No kitchen and no bedroom for the two of us and no prospects to speak of. I just knew I had to be here and it’s the greatest decision and act of craziness I’ve ever done.
My whole life I’ve acted on my own drive. If I hadn’t taken risks I’d never have the life and love I have today. Every day is a bit of risk and you have to just grab the day and risk it’s all going to work out.
