Today we’d like to introduce you to Boris De Granda.
Hi Boris, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up backstage with The Cleveland Orchestra, my father being the Assistant Concertmaster, and was exposed to violins already as a toddler. I was not a performance prodigy like my father, but instead found talent pursuing tangible art. Eventually I combined the two and became a violin maker, a luthier. I then realized how all my other passions were also wrapped into violins: physics, chemistry, history, engineering, and culture, for example… as well as a strong focus on aesthetics, abstract reasoning, and meticulous artistry.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road is never smooth, but this also offers us the spices of life! My main and ongoing struggle is witnessing a paradigm shift of social value structure, away from a cultural heritage based upon the rewards of wisdom and effort, and toward ever-quicker-faster personal perks, even if they are fleeting and spiritually bereft. Perhaps its time our society slows down a bit, to better enjoy the fruits of our reality while we are living it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I pursue my business with a concierge-style approach. My goal is to pair the performance artist with their ideal tool, through which they may comfortably express potentials of tonal color and nuance, while at the same time feel relaxed and inspired to explore further developmental capabilities. I am not limited to sharing only my own work either, I also offer my concierge services to connect musicians to high-quality instruments built by historical makers of distinction and repute- from fine quality semi-modern examples to golden-period Italian masterpieces of investment value. My goal is to match the tonal quality and potential of a particular instrument with the playing technique and career goals of my client, keeping within their budget. I watch how a musician plays, study their approach, examine their current instrument to identify its encumbrances, then interview and get to know my client personally to better understand exactly what their directive goals and needs are. Then I procure best-matching instruments and arrange a musical trial so they may explore the voices of various potential partners before identifying an ideal artistic companion. It’s just like match-making! When an artist discovers and utilizes his complementary tool, the results will be harmonious. And from there I continue with ongoing participation, offering regular upkeep and adjustments, so their instrument will continue to sound its balanced best.
What matters most to you? Why?
My greatest reward is helping performance artists convey their passions through our universal language of music. The reward is sublime and transcendental, in both interpersonal discourse as well as public offering. Music lives within the moment, it is the connection between the notes that moves the heart. When I can facilitate this exchange, in these moments my life is truly bliss.
