Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbie Mak.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always felt a deep, natural calling toward artistic expression, but my journey really took off when I was 16. I started posting acoustic covers and original songs on YouTube, using the internet as a way to share my voice with a broader audience outside of Hong Kong. What started as simple bedroom recordings gradually blossomed into a full career as an independent singer, songwriter, music producer, and abstract painter.
As my sound evolved from traditional R&B to a fusion of house, afro house, neo-soul, and electronic pop, I began collaborating with house and electronic producers around the globe, including DJ Fudge, Hallex M, Moon Rocket, and Viot. Over time, I’ve been fortunate to release music with international electronic dance music labels like Nervous Records NYC, Cafe De Anatolia, Papa Records, and Soave.
Alongside my solo releases, I expanded into creating royalty-free vocal sample packs and toplines on platforms like LANDR, Tracklib, and BandLab—a venture that connected my music directly with producers and creators worldwide. Concurrently, my visual artwork through abstract painting has allowed me to express emotion in a visual form, serving as the perfect complement to my music.
Today, my focus remains on pushing boundaries across genres and mediums, staying true to my creative independence, and continuing to build meaningful connections through both sound and art.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth, linear road. Navigating the music and creative industries as an independent artist comes with constant hurdles, especially when trying to build an international career from Hong Kong.
One of the biggest challenges early on was learning how to navigate the business side of music independently—handling contract negotiations, managing rights for sample packs and toplines, and pitching to international dance labels without traditional team backing. Balancing the creative freedom of an independent artist with the administrative demands of self-management required a steep learning curve.
Another ongoing struggle has been overcoming geographic and cultural boundaries. Building cross-continental collaborations across different time zones—from Europe to the US—means working odd hours and constantly finding ways to stand out in global markets. On top of that, wearing multiple hats as a singer, songwriter, producer, and painter can sometimes lead to creative burnout. Finding the harmony between different artistic outlets without losing momentum in any of them has required strict discipline and self-care.
Despite these struggles, every obstacle has pushed me to become more versatile and resilient. Learning to adapt and take full ownership of my career has ultimately made the journey far more rewarding.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a singer, songwriter, music producer, and abstract painter, my work revolves around creating evocative audio-visual experiences that blend organic emotion with modern electronic production. I specialize in a fusion of soulful, sultry R&B vocals, house, afro house, neo-soul, and electronic pop, along with crafting custom toplines and royalty-free vocal sample packs for producers worldwide.
I’m best known for my cross-genre releases on international dance labels like Nervous Records NYC, Cafe De Anatolia, Papa Records, and Soave, as well as my widely used sample packs on platforms like LANDR, Tracklib, and BandLab. In the visual realm, my abstract paintings serve as a vibrant extension of my music, translating sound and emotion into physical color and texture.
What I am most proud of is maintaining full creative independence while building a truly global footprint from Hong Kong. What sets me apart is my ability to bridge distinct creative worlds: I’m not just supplying vocals—I engineer, produce, write, and visually conceptualize my projects. Bringing a distinct sonic identity and a multidimensional, fine-art perspective to every collaboration allows me to connect with audiences and fellow creators across diverse genres, mediums, and cultures.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Beyond the music and the art, I’d love to leave readers with a reminder that creativity doesn’t have to fit into a single box. You don’t have to choose between being just a vocalist, a producer, or a visual artist—you can be all of them, and each passion will feed and enrich the others.
