Check Out Argelia Atilano’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Argelia Atilano.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always believed that every story matters and should be told, because you never know who it might move, inspire, or empower. What’s remarkable is that as a little girl, I was painfully shy, hence I kept my thoughts to myself and to God. Speaking up never came naturally, and I certainly never imagined that one day my voice would become my greatest instrument and my name a household name among the Hispanic community in Los Angeles. Yet the universe has a beautiful way of guiding us toward our true calling if and only when we make the time to read the signs and take the right path.

My journey in media began in television as a reporter and entertainment correspondent, where I learned to step out of my comfort zone and build confidence in front of the camera. But it wasn’t until I transitioned into radio that I discovered something deeper: my true purpose. Behind the microphone, I realized the extraordinary power of storytelling. One voice, one story, one honest conversation has the ability to lift someone’s spirit, spark hope, or even change the course of a day. What began as the uncertain path of a shy girl has grown into a lifelong mission: to use my voice as an instrument to connect, uplift, and create spaces where those who feel alone can also feel seen, heard, and valued.
My journey is profoundly shaped by my Mexican-American culture, identity, and upbringing. I was born in Chicago but raised between Los Angeles and my parents’ hometown in Jalisco, Mexico. It was in East Los Angeles, as a teenager, that I truly found my voice, embraced my identity, and discovered my pride as a first-generation college graduate. Becoming the first in my family to pursue higher education at Loyola Marymount University and to walk away with not one, but two degrees was more than an academic milestone. It was the fulfillment of a dream carried not only in my heart, but also in my mother’s. As an immigrant and a single mother, she endured immense challenges in a country where she had no family and spoke no English. She sacrificed endlessly to give my three sisters and me the opportunities she never had, and every step I’ve taken in my career has been, in many ways, a tribute to her courage and resilience.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As a woman, a mother, and a Latina, I’ve faced the same challenges many women do—striving to balance career, family, and personal growth. After more than a decade as a TV reporter, I made the difficult decision to step away from the stability of corporate media to prioritize my family and embark on a new chapter as an entrepreneur. Building something from the ground up without the safety net or steady salary of a big company has been both humbling and demanding. There are days of doubt, setbacks, fear, and the constant juggling of too many roles.
But I’ve been fortunate not to walk this journey alone. With the support and partnership of my husband, we’ve taken this leap together, venturing into professional independence, creating content for the digital space, and building a brand that is truly our own. We are a team both at home and at work, never losing sight of our mission: to serve our loyal audience and community in Los Angeles with authenticity, honesty, and heart. We are proud of our story and legacy both inside and outside of radio, as we continue to evolve. Navigating this new phase hasn’t been easy, but it has pushed us to grow in ways we never imagined, giving us the freedom and flexibility to align our work with our deepest priorities, our family values, and our purpose.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Every stage in life prepares us for the next, and I often say my journey has been one of reinvention, resilience, rebooting, and resetting. My career began in television with Telemundo as a local reporter and anchor, and soon after with Univision’s national show Primer Impacto. But it was when I joined forces with my now-husband, Omar Velasco, as co-hosts of El Show de Omar y Argelia on K-Love 107.5 FM that my life truly changed both personally and professionally. For more than 20 years, we’ve had the privilege of waking up Hispanic families across Los Angeles with stories, commentary, music, laughter, the occasional tear, and countless heartfelt conversations. Our journey has taken us from Univision Radio to launching our own digital platforms, and now to broadcasting live with Entravision’s José 97.5 and 107.1 FM, always rooted in our mission of serving and uplifting our community.
Along the way, I’ve written two books. The first, co-authored with my husband, Amor Al Aire (Love’s in the Air), offers a glimpse into the challenges of balancing marriage, family, and the demands of hosting a morning radio show in a major market. My deep commitment to education, personal growth, and uplifting the Latin community, especially young girls and women also inspired me to write my first bilingual children’s book, Grandes Dreamers, dedicated to my daughters, Camila and Anabella.
Looking back, I see my journey not just as a career, but as a calling. From the timid, insecure girl who never imagined her presence could reach this far, to the woman who now uses the voice God gave her as a powerful instrument of faith to connect, empower, and inspire, I am mindful and deeply grateful for every chapter of my life rooted in service. My mission is simple yet profound: to honor my Latino roots, amplify the stories of my people and community, and create platforms that remind us all that our voices matter, no matter who we are. Because when one of us dares to dream, speak, and rise in faith, we open the door for countless others to do the same.

How do you think about happiness?
Most recently, I’ve stepped into an exciting new chapter, my safe space and passion project: the Comadres Unfiltered podcast, which I co-host with three of my closest amigas. It’s a bilingual, bicultural space where we can be unapologetically real, sharing stories of womanhood, motherhood, sisterhood, wellness, culture, identity, and everything in between. At this stage in my life, it feels more important than ever to create platforms where women from all walks of life can feel seen, heard, valued, and connected. Now in its third season, Comadres Unfiltered feels like the natural continuation of all my chapters so far, a space born from my roots, my challenges, my longings, and my love for storytelling, filled with tears, laughter, and countless cheers. Through this podcast, I get to continue empowering others and remind every woman, — including my three amigas and co-hosts, Mindy, Diana, and Janett—that her voice matters and that every story and journey has the power to inspire. Beyond the microphone, my greatest joy and most cherished gift is my family, because family is absolutely everything. I consider myself a proud daughter, caring sister, loving wife, and a sweet yet firm mamá of two beautiful daughters who are my motor, my daily reminder of purpose, and my greatest source of inspiration in everything I do. My story is still being written, but its heartbeat has always remained the same: faith, love, gratitude, community, and a commitment to leaving a legacy of empowerment for the next generation. And if my journey has taught me anything, it’s this: our voices are powerful, our stories matter, and our lives are bridges. With God’s grace and blessing, I will continue to share all of myself in the hope of opening doors, lighting the way for others to rise, shine, and share their gifts with the world. Appreciating and enjoying what I do each day, feeling the love of those dearest to me, savoring life’s smallest moments, and never saying no to a nice glass of wine. That’s happiness to me.
