Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Williams
Hi Anna, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started tattooing after graduating from Pratt in 2019. My friend and mentor Angie brought me on to her private studio and taught me how to tattoo. When the pandemic started in 2020 I threw a hail mary and left Brooklyn for LA. My then very new tattoo career got started slowly but surely. I worked at several different places before being ready to break out on my own and start my own shop, Twice Rabbit that I now run with my dear friend and partner Alyssa.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been smooth and its been bumpy but I think that’s true of all things, and especially those that are worthwhile. Time’s my career has felt toughest are those when it feels precarious. If I don’t go to work I don’t get paid. And I probably won’t ever have very good health insurance. It feels smooth because I’m not alone. I have such a great community of fellow artists and tattooers.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a tattoo artist and shop owner. I think my style is ever-evolving but I’ve heard it called etching or engraving style and that seems to work. I mostly just turn my drawings into tattoos and whatever people want to call it works for me. I am most proud of doing my first tattoo convention last year in Leeds in the north of England. Two days of being in a sea of wonderful tattooers and it didn’t even rain. I don’t like thinking of myself as set apart from others. But I would say a stand out attribute I try to maintain is my attention to detail and my care with clients. I really do aim for clients to be comfortable and heard, and judging by my number of regulars I think it’s working which I am really proud of.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The key of saving money. Tattooers had such a boom during Covid and I am really glad I saved money during that time. It’s not always easy when you work in a cash-in-hand business and it sounds boring but maxing out your ROTH is sexy.
