Check Out Anna Jung-Hwa’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Jung-Hwa.

Hi Anna, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Thanks so much for having me! My name is Anna Jung-Hwa (she/her). I’m a Korean American photographer that is based in Chicago, but am frequently working in Los Angeles and New York. I’ve been shooting photos since I was given a point-and-shoot film camera when I was in grade school.

Fast forward to college – I would shoot for fun, but nothing serious. Once I was in my senior year, I decided to pursue photography part-time and eventually went full-time freelance.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course not! To begin with, I began my full-time freelance career in January 2020, which we all know wasn’t the most ideal year to begin a freelance career. It’s been an uphill journey since then, but I’ve continued to push forward despite the wild ride it’s been.

I also haven’t always been supported by those around me and as a freelance artist, support is huge.

Another struggle is having to learn to do everything. I don’t have an HR department, a creative department, or an accounting department… As a freelancer, you have to do it all!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a photographer and I specialize in editorial and lifestyle portraiture. I’d say that I am most known by my clientele for my inclusive shooting and editing.

I’d like to think that before I am a photographer, I am an empathetic human. Which in turn, helps me create a connection with my clients and deliver that connection and comfortability through my images.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Amidst the chaos of the last two and a half years, the biggest lesson I’ve learned is the importance of leaning on those around you. Without the support of your community, freelancing and creating can be nearly impossible. Leaning on those around you helps make freelancing more feasible and fun!
