Check Out Ali Mills’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ali Mills

Ali, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am an LA based singer songwriter. Born and raised in Malibu, I have lived in various parts of Los Angeles throughout my life. Currently, home is in Calabasas a few miles from the ocean. I studied music in high school and a little bit in college, but knowing that I never wanted to teach music, I abandoned that adventure and played various parts in local bands. I spent time touring, and played in several states, and traveled to seven different countries, all of which have shaped who I am as a person, and help me draw from my experiences to pen songs.

After performing with several bands over the years, starting a family and once again turning to songwriting during the pandemic, I have begun releasing singles off my upcoming LP. The first single, “Canyon” is a bright and beautiful musical daydream about California. My next single will be released April 15th in anticipation of the full album release later this Summer. The record will feature contributions from the likes of Jimmy Paxson (Stevie Nicks, Keith Urban), Joe Karnes (Fitz and the Tantrums), Dylan Salfer, Steve McCormick, and my brother, Blake.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’d like to meet someone who says the road is smooth. Without struggle there can be no growth. One of the biggest challenges for Artists today is the devaluation of music through distribution platforms. It is the struggle of our generation, and I believe this is the generation that can change it. We have been so apathetic to it over the last 20 years, and now we are at risk of losing our amazing indie and local artists because they are forced to give their art away for free, making them lose money trying to do the only thing that brings them happiness. It is a very broken system. I am excited to see a mobilization of artists taking a stand against it, and I hope that continues to grow and organize!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a singer songwriter, but I also like to think of myself as a cultivator of sound. I love experimentation, and letting my songs evolve organically when I spend time in the studio. I use music to communicate a feeling through sound, tone, and through storytelling. I write lyrics as if they’re a paintbrush. From the first note, I want the music to create a canvas, the words I write and sing are filled with emotion and intent.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Don’t be afraid to experiment. The burden of seeking approval from others is so hard to escape for many, including myself, but the moment you step outside of that worry, the most beautiful version of yourself will shine. So trust it!
