Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Mendez.
Hi Alexis , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My path to becoming a holistic therapist has really been a journey of ups and downs. I’ve always been interested in the different layers of what makes us human, our emotions, bodies, relationships, identities, values, spirituality, and the experiences that shape us.
I earned my Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology at California State University Northridge and became a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California. Early in my career, I spent several years providing psychotherapy to survivors of interpersonal violence. That work taught me so much about resilience, relationships, identity, and what it means to support someone through difficult chapters of their life.
At the same time, yoga and spirituality were becoming increasingly important parts of my own life. I’ve been teaching yoga since 2015, and I became fascinated by the overlap between psychology, embodiment, mindfulness, and spiritual practices. I received additional certification to provide Trauma-Informed Yoga for help those healing from trauma through mindful movement, such as yoga. I started asking myself why we so often separate these parts of ourselves when, in reality, they are constantly interacting.
That eventually became the foundation for my work with clients. Today, I practice holistic and integrative psychotherapy, which for me means looking at the whole person rather than focusing exclusively on symptoms. My work integrates psychotherapy with mind-body practices, mindfulness, parts work, nervous-system regulation, and space for clients to explore their own spirituality and intuition when that feels meaningful to them.
I’m especially passionate about working with women, queer folks, spiritually minded people, healers and other helping professionals experiencing burnout. I love helping people move from simply surviving their lives to feeling more grounded, connected, authentic, and aligned with who they actually are. Most of my current clients are therapists themselves or highly ambitious women that are struggling to find meaning in their life outside of work and are left feeling burnt out.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not and honestly, I’m grateful for that.
My path has involved a lot of questioning, changing directions, and figuring out how to bring different parts of myself together. I’ve had to learn that I don’t have to fit myself into one box just because it makes other people more comfortable.
For a long time, I think there can be this expectation that being a therapist or wellness practitioner means presenting yourself as completely put together, serious, and somehow separate from all of the messiness of being human, but I’m a whole person, too. I have also struggled with my own mental health challenges throughout my life and have found ways of healing with my own therapy, but also outside of traditional therapy with yoga, spiritual practices, being outside in nature, dancing at music festivals, and spending more time with people I care about. I don’t believe healing means becoming some perfectly calm, permanently “healed” version of yourself because that’s not realistic. It’s about developing enough self-awareness and self-trust to understand yourself, honor your needs, and make choices that feel more aligned.
That perspective has become especially meaningful in my work with burnout. I see so many therapists, healers, caregivers, and highly empathic people who have become incredibly good at caring for everyone else while becoming disconnected from themselves.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work is rooted in holistic and whole-person healing. I believe mental health support doesn’t exist in isolation from the rest of our lives, so therapy can be a space to explore the relationship between our thoughts, emotions, bodies, relationships, identity, values, and spirituality.
I work with adults navigating anxiety, burnout, identity exploration, life transitions, self-worth, relationships, boundaries, body disconnection, and feeling stuck in patterns they intellectually understand but continue to repeat.
One area I’m particularly passionate about is supporting other therapists, healers, helping professionals, and spiritually oriented people experiencing burnout. People who spend their lives caring for others can sometimes lose touch with their own needs. There can be a lot of pressure to always be available, emotionally attuned, productive, or “the strong one.” I love creating a space where those people don’t have to be the healer for a while and they get to simply be human.
My work also extends beyond the therapy room. I’m passionate about creating and leading wellness workshops, yoga experiences, retreats and community events that bring people together around practices like yoga, mindfulness, nervous-system regulation, self-reflection, and spiritual exploration. I enjoy creating intentional spaces where people can slow down, reconnect with themselves, and connect with a community of like-minded people. There’s something really powerful about healing in community, and I hope to continue expanding this part of my work through retreats, workshops, and community wellness experiences.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I think one of my greatest strengths is my ability to embrace all the different parts of what makes us human. I’ve never been someone who fits neatly into a box, and I don’t think the people I work with should have to fit into one either!
That perspective influences everything I do, from my work as a therapist to my approach to holistic wellness. I want people to feel like they can bring all of themselves into the room without having to edit, minimize, or explain away the parts that don’t seem to fit together. I think embracing that complexity, staying curious, and allowing ourselves to evolve are some of the most important ingredients for both personal and professional growth.
