Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabe Gault.
Gabe, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I grew up in Venice Beach in the early nineties, which is a huge source of inspiration for me. The colors, the fashion, the community made a huge impact on me. Early on, I was diagnosed with a reading disability, which made my ability to communicate difficult and led to a lot of frustration and anger, so I turned to art to express myself. I didn’t pursue a classical education but was lucky enough to find mentors to guide me. And as a kid that used to struggle in school, I’m very proud to say that a lot of my techniques and skills are self-taught. I want my art to speak to people like me- struggling with unseen burdens, fighting for self-love in a judgmental world, and with the hope that we all can find our higher selves.
Ironically, my fiancee is a writer, and she helped me write my answers… you’re never really cured from a reading disability ;p
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I would say my body of work is heavily influenced by camouflage and today’s pop culture. I like to use the motto “blending in, standing out,” which references iconic figures seamlessly intergraded into today’s society. I also touch on subjects from Mental health awareness to Gun control regulations. Through my artwork, you will also find iconic people through history who have got through hardship at some point in their life. I believe by people seeing a familiar figure larger than life thats been through something similar, it’s comforting and lets people know that they too are loved and supported.
Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
It’s very important to me to talk about current issues going on in society- social commentary is a central theme in each of my pieces, whether it’s on the pop art or political sides. Art is a snapshot of its time and gives future generations insight; I think as an artist, one of our biggest responsibilities is to use our voices to change the world for the better.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Throughout the year, I have a couple of pop-ups and shows around Los Angeles. I would suggest checking out my social media to stay up to date on where I’ll be at next. I’m most active on Instagram and my facebook page.
