Today we’d like to introduce you to Beverly Salas.
Beverly, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I am an artist from Orange County! I was raised in a single-family home and often expressed my emotions through art growing up. I didn’t start taking my artwork seriously until I was in high school and started making binder art for people. I was known as the “binder art girl” I made over 400 drawings for people without charging a penny! People started telling me that they would pay me for pieces and I thought, “You want to pay me??? To draw you something? That’s crazy!”. I never thought my art would take over my life and be my career! I have been able to support myself and my family with my artwork. I am so grateful. I still can’t wrap my head around people willing to spend their hard earned money on my work.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I like to refer to myself as a professional doodler. I don’t think my work is amazing or all that. My artwork feels like a self-portrait or almost a diary that I am sharing with the world. The fact that people support me and my work feel so surreal, and I can’t stress that enough. I like to experiment with different mediums. From ink, to paint, to collaging, sculpting and (soon) ceramics and pottery! I like to create things and show people that there is no right or wrong way of doing things. I didn’t take any art classes, except digital arts in high school and ceramics 1 in college, so I have no “real” art “training.” I think sharing my work throughout the years has been so rewarding. I get to connect with people on a beautiful level. Hearing people’s interpretations of what I do is so cool! I could have a completely different intention of making something, and someone will interpret it according to their life and experience, and I find that fascinating. I am inspired by everything and everyone around me. I like to put my daily experiences and thoughts into what I make.
Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
I think that if it wasn’t for a local art scene existing, I would have never been able to make being an artist my career. The fact that I have a local art scene is a complete BLESSING. I’ve been doing the artwalk in Santa Ana for five years (this April) and it has helped me get my artwork out there. Art and creating is a form of escaping from a lot of stressful things that happen in the world. You can’t always control everything around you, but you can control what you are creating and the impact you make with it.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
People can see a lot of my recent work on my instagram, @Beverlysalas, and my Etsy: @ArtbyBeverlySalas. I also display my work at Unlisted in Santa Ana and participate in the Santa Ana Artwalk every walk with Konsept.
