We’re looking forward to introducing you to Caitlin Adler. Check out our conversation below.
Caitlin, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me as Executive Director at Project Ropa is anything but typical—which is part of what I love about the work. I usually start my day by checking in with our team, reviewing priorities for the day, and addressing any immediate needs from our service sites. Much of my time is spent juggling strategic planning, fundraising, partnership development, and overseeing operations. I’m also often on the move—visiting our mobile service locations, connecting with community partners, or meeting with donors. Some days involve media interviews or advocacy efforts to raise awareness about clothing insecurity. I’m constantly problem-solving and adapting to ensure we can meet the needs of the unhoused and low-income communities we serve. While the work is challenging, it’s deeply rewarding, and no matter how hectic the day gets, I always try to stay grounded in our mission to provide dignity through access to clothing and hygiene essentials.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Caitlin Adler, Founder and Executive Director at Project Ropa, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit dedicated to providing essential clothing, hygiene items, and dignity to people experiencing homelessness and extreme poverty. Our organization is unique in that we operate the only mobile clothing closet of its kind for people in need in the Los Angeles area. We not only distribute clothing and care items, but we also focus on creating pre-packaged “grab-and-go” clothing packs that make it easier for individuals in need to receive essentials quickly and efficiently.
What makes Project Ropa special is our commitment to treating every person we serve with respect and compassion. We partner with volunteers, donors, and community organizations to expand our reach across Los Angeles, ensuring that basic necessities are delivered consistently and thoughtfully. Right now, we’re working to grow our programs and partnerships so we can serve even more individuals, helping them feel seen, supported, and valued in their daily lives.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
A moment that really shaped how I see the world came from watching my cousin, who has mental health challenges, struggle to maintain a job and stable housing. Over time, I saw how his options became increasingly limited—not because of a lack of effort or ambition, but because he didn’t have access to basic necessities like clean clothing and hygiene essentials. Experiencing firsthand how something as simple as having proper clothing or hygiene can impact someone’s dignity, employment opportunities, and housing stability opened my eyes to the systemic barriers many people face. It inspired me to work toward creating solutions that restore not just access, but also respect and dignity, for those experiencing homelessness or extreme poverty.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me the value of empathy and the importance of seeing the humanity in every person—lessons that success alone could never have fully imparted. Watching loved ones struggle with circumstances beyond their control showed me how small acts of support, dignity, and compassion can make an enormous difference in someone’s life. It taught me to approach the world with patience, humility, and a commitment to creating real, tangible change for those facing hardship—perspectives that success, on its own, rarely demands.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say that what really matters to me is making a meaningful difference in the lives of others and approaching the world with empathy and honesty. I care deeply about understanding people’s experiences, listening without judgment, and being transparent in my intentions and actions. Whether it’s supporting someone in need, building trust in a team, or standing up for what’s right, I try to live in a way that reflects compassion, integrity, and a genuine desire to help others thrive.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Absolutely. I believe giving my best isn’t about recognition—it’s about integrity and the impact of my actions. Whether someone notices or not, the effort I put in can make a real difference, especially for those who rely on it most. Doing my best consistently, even without praise, is a way of honoring the people and the mission I care about, and it keeps me accountable to my own values.
