Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Kuo.
Karen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My father is Robert Kuo. And growing up in a creative/artistic family, I didn’t even think about doing anything else. My grandfather is a calligraphy artist that has pieces in the permanent collection at Vatican and the Taiwan Natural History Museum. We have a piece of our cloisonne work in the Sackler Gallery in Washington D.C. This is what seemed most natural. I started working in the showroom in 1993 and my job morphed into what I needed to do and what I was good at doing. My job has also evolved because this industry is constantly evolving.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The challenges and struggles are lessons that cannot be “taught” in an academic setting. These experiences enrich us and in a way, builds character. There will always be challenges and obstacles. You just handle them as they come along.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Robert Kuo Ltd. is a gallery/showroom. We work in mainly repousse and lacquer but we also have Peking glass and cloisonne. My father designs everything. His passion is to create and design. My job is to support that passion.
What sets us apart has always been our aesthetic. People can recognize Robert Kuo pieces around the world.
He reinvigorates ancient techniques and crafts with his whimsical design. We enjoy what we do and we take it very personally.
What were you like growing up?
I am the eldest child of 3. My parents are both the eldest of their siblings. I think I was born into my personality – bossy. In a Chinese family, the oldest comes with responsibilities. But responsibilities also meant empowerment. And I was even more empowered by attending a single sex school. Without knowing it, I grew up knowing no boundaries or limitations. I have always been interested in cooking/baking. And I started cooking when I was young watching my mother and grandmothers.
