Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharondra Marks.
Sharondra, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I originally started in January 2005 as Shady Lady Fashion Accessory. It was my love for dressing up outfits just by adding accessories. I took a five years hiatus starting in 2008 up until September 0f 2013. During that five years, all I could think of was how I could brand myself and come back stronger plus more professional. I was hit with a tragedy in 2012 which delayed the process by a year. I returned with a slight name change as Shady Lady accessory bar or S.L.A.B. I sold from the trunk of my car, vended at special events, and rented spaces in different parts of the city throwing pop-up shops featuring myself and other vendors and eventually launched my website in 2016.
I took business classes on my days off from my 9 to 5 and even sometimes after long days at work. I attended seminars and networking events. And with the information I gained along with some trial and error, I’ve helped a few other entrepreneurs start successful businesses.
Some of my proud moments during my ten years back is business are, I styled for proms, photoshoots, weddings, etc. Some of my work was seen on daytime tv as well as book covers. I also have been interviewed on podcasts, been recognized by the black business women’s rock organization, and a keynote speaker for a few different women’s groups.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. I was hit with tragedy, loss, setbacks, anxiety and some things internally that I’ve had to overcome. Mostly conquering the enemy within. That small voice that tries to tell you that you cant or you are not good enough.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Shady Lady Accessory Bar?
We are your one-stop accessory shop specializing in women’s fashion accessories. Customer service and a commitment to excellence is our number one priority, therefore we pride ourselves on experience and customer retention. I am most proud of the fact that I opened my 1st brick and mortar location in November 2022 in the community that I grew up in. It is my goal to inspire and give back. Services offered are styling glam parties and our Dress for Success program centered around the youth. Helping with self-esteem, mindset and providing resources and guidance for personal development.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I really don’t believe in Luck, however I believe in the process and everything even what those would consider to be bad luck is an opportunity for growth and learning.
