Today we’d like to introduce you to John Gheur.
Thanks for sharing your story with us John. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started as a fine arts photographer with a BFA from what was then Otis/Parsons School of Design. With a passion for creativity, imaging and the arts in general I quickly found myself exploring every avenue of the arts. This lead to a passion for digital works starting on an old mac II with Photoshop 1.0. hehe. 🙂 Professionally, I ended up working with numerous photographers in LA such as Nels Isrealson (keyart), Davis Factor (Smashbox fame), and Darren Keith (fashion) amongst others. I soon found myself wanting more from photography which lead me to explore other markets.
After university, I travelled and moved around for a few years looking for where to settle down and build. This allowed me to explore other markets in Europe and the east coast. I ended up back in Los Angeles in 1995 and quickly found myself working in advertising and design for an amazing boutique called The Mednick Group which later rolled into Think New Ideas. After almost 3 years there I learned digital was the way forward and during that time the internet started to become a force to reckon with and not many people knew how to do creative with it.
Fast forward to working in entertainment marketing with Paramount Television and then becoming head of creative of an amazing digital agency called DNA Studio. We quickly became a global force in digital strategy and branded entertainment winning numerous awards. It was a privilege to work with brands such as Coca-Cola, Harry Potter and other A-list franchises, Budweiser and automotive.
In 2004, I founded Signature Creative which is now in its 13th year, having survived and continue to provide ground breaking works in pioneering tech and creative services innovations. We have worked with such giants as Viacom, MTV, eBay, PepsiCo, Mattel, Disney, Qualcomm, SalesForce, United Health Care and Ericsson. Not to forget too our passion working and disrupting with startups such as 8i, Ptch at DreamWorks, and others.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Life is never smooth but rather wavy. It’s all about how you ride it. Being a surfer has taught me to always hold your chin up, face the challenges, look ahead, de-emotionalize the issue, and the answers will present themselves.
Struggles are really about business decisions on how to grow, how to support your teams and how to get customers to pay in a timely manner. 🙂
