Today we’d like to introduce you to Zoe Nazarian.
Hi Zoe, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Early on in my life, I realized that I had a passion for entertaining. I did theatre as a kid and eventually threw myself into auditioning for projects outside of that. As a child, I faced a ton of rejection because I didn’t fit the “mold” that the industry was wanting at the time. I took matters into my own hands and decided to begin posting videos on the internet.
I was able to express myself creatively on my own terms and was able to create my own narrative. I focused on topics such as confidence and created videos in the comedy and lifestyle spaces on YouTube. Eventually, as I got older, I felt compelled to dive back into the acting world. I was so pleased to see more diversity on screen in terms of different body types, races, ages and people in general. I made this decision to jump back into it right before the world stopped, thanks to a worldwide pandemic. During this time however, I was able to be more introspective and spent more time perfecting my craft. Now that some time has passed, I have been working on a web series, auditioning, working with some amazing brands on social media, and attending my final year of university! I am excited to see what this next chapter of my life will bring!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This road has been anything but smooth! As I mentioned, I didn’t fit the “mold” when I first started acting as a kid. I was curvier, had braces, big curly hair, and freckles. Back then, I didn’t really see people who looked like me on screen. Times have definitely changed, and today I am happy to see an overall shift in the amount of diversity in all aspects of the industry. A challenge that I have faced recently is understanding that even some people close to you don’t want to see you excel. Someone who was on my team recently made it clear that they weren’t super motivated to see me succeed, and I realized in that moment that I needed to make a change. I decided to follow my gut instinct and part ways with this person. I am now working on surrounding myself with positive people who want the best for me and believe in what I do.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an actor, social media content creator, and student. I am currently a series regular on a web series and have starred in short films this past year. I am looking forward to continuing to build my resume going into this next year! Aside from acting, I have the pleasure of working with some amazing brands and creating content for them across my socials.
In terms of what sets me apart from others, I think that Oprah said it best recently: “People get to where they want to go because they know where they want to go.” I’d say that my drive and motivation to get to where I want to go is what sets me apart.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
If you ask my parents this question, they’d go on and on about how I always wanted to be in front of the camera. My dad was a photographer as I was growing up and my mom always made it a point to record moments on her camcorder, so I was used to having cameras around. I joined a musical theatre company for years where I performed in several productions, which inspired my love for acting. I’d say that I was an extroverted, confident, and creative kid!
