Meet Dawn Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Williams. 

Hi Dawn, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My story starts in a small town called Morro Bay on the coast of California. I always knew that I didn’t want to be there long and sure enough, right after high school I was out! I moved to the San Fernando Valley to attend Cal State Northridge. I studied Kinesiology, but oh so often was asked if I was studying Film or something pertaining to entertainment, and I guess I kind of took that as a sign. After I graduated and not long after I landed a big girl job, I realized life is seriously too short to always wonder- “What if?” I always knew deep down I had a drive in me and a spunk unlike the rest. I knew studying acting would be fascinate me. I couldn’t fight the urge any longer. 

So, I moved to Studio City and decided to give acting and modeling my full attention. This was around 2015. From 2015-2018 I worked various jobs and landed small projects from friends. I took classes and went on a countless number of auditions. In 2019 I finally landed a project with Chevrolet, which led to a national commercial. At the time I was working at a Members Only club smack dab in the heart of Hollywood called hClub and things were really looking up for me: Then, Covid-19! 

My boyfriend and I decided on a whim we would move out of LA, so we moved to where his family resides in Laguna Niguel, CA. There spawned a whole new me. I took up a hobby that I had no idea would captivate my passions and take me into new realms of creativity within myself that had laid dormant for years and years. 

I picked up paint supplies at the local craft supply store. Canvas, acrylic paint, a few brushes. A few weeks later I had some art pieces lying around that my boyfriend couldn’t stop talking about. He demanded I keep working and that I start sharing my art with family and friends. I slowly but surely began to open up about what I was up to. And here I am now- 

Nine months pregnant with my first child, loving the woman I am becoming. Enjoying the creations of life and art that literally are coming out of me! I am expecting my baby girl any day now, official due date is October 30th. With this new chapter of Dawn there comes a fresh version of collections and projects of art and hopefully some acting roles- Stay tuned! 

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Was it smooth some of the time-yes, but most certainly not most the of the time. It was very lonely for me and looking back on all of it, I am so grateful for those who have stood by me all these years and those who never gave up on me or broke it off with me even when I was so invested in my selfish pursuits. For all the family and friends that have continued to support me and my career goals. There have been so many obstacles, for example, money. I remember when I was so broke my phone got turned off and the only way, I could connect to the world was when I was hooked up to wi-fi! and thank God wi-fi is everywhere now haha! 

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As I’ve transitioned to focusing more on my painting, I am starting to realize as a creative, the real area of specialization has to come from living life. Being a master at the craft of living, breathing, thinking, loving, feeling, touching, etc. is what is going to give you the best go at nearly all creative pursuits. I specialize in being a mixed-race woman in America and the human experience that goes along with that- can you imagine? 

I do believe I have a unique look that sets me apart from other talent and I do have a style of art that I have coined as “drip art” or “drip painting”. In my work, I take various small bowls of paint and I find fun interesting creative ways to fuse sound and rhythm through the bowls of paint and drip them on canvas. I’m most proud of the work that has come out of that method. The feeling has been so strong and so potent! I think it shows in the work. 

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My parents- Bea and Paul Williams have been my #1 fans I swear. My dad is really urging to hold onto and showcase a lot of my original pieces in his home. My mom is an artist too and she spends so much time analyzing my art and marveling at it. She talks to me and inspires me to work. I’m so blessed to have these two art enthusiasts in my corner.
