Rising Stars: Meet Jourdan Washington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jourdan Washington.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up playing the piano and I’ve always had a fond passion for music. As I got older, I knew I wanted to be involved in it as much as possible. My industry experience began at Atlantic Records going into my Junior year in college. I interned in the Brand Partnerships Department and it really opened my eyes to how the industry functions and works with other entities. The following year, I interned at RCA in the Urban Promo department and went back to school as a College Marketing Rep for Sony. I was able to put together marketing campaigns for artists across the Sony labels on campus, as well as attend shows, pass out merch, and assist with postering campaigns. This really shaped me and prepared me for life after school and gave me the opportunity to officially work in the marketing department at RCA where I’m currently at now.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The main obstacle is just getting in the door. Once I was in, I made sure I never left. All it takes is for one person to believe in you, and once you build your relationship with that person, make sure you continue to build your network. Being persistent is key. I also knew that once I asked for something, I was able to give something valuable back in return.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a Marketing Specialist at RCA and do marketing consulting at Keep Cool as well. I assist with overseeing artist rollout campaigns for any upcoming releases. We work closely with every department as well as with the artist management teams to ensure the artist’s vision for their project comes to life. We’re tasked with getting assets in for release, whether that be short or long-form content, assist with setting up promo opps, and so much more. I’m most proud of getting to work with some of the newer artists and seeing their growth after releasing their first project. It’s really rewarding to be at the beginning of some of these artist development stories. But some of my favorite projects I’ve got to assist with include Yebba, Marzz, Normani, and Khalid.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Protect your mental health and set boundaries! I think a lot of people feel like they can have access to you 24/7 since we’re all home, but it’s important to be able to take time for yourself regardless of where you are.
