Life & Work with Robert Vasquez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Vasquez.

Hi Robert, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Like many other artists, I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. My biggest inspiration came from Comic Books and cartoons. My career goals bounced around as I got older but I always knew something within the arts is what I wanted most. In middle school, I wanted to be a Comic Book artist and in high school, I wanted to become a Tattoo artist. Once I entered college, I took many art classes and finally realized what I wanted to do, Concept and Visual Development for Animation. I transferred out of community college and attended Cal State University, Fullerton and since then I have been trying to break into the Animation Industry.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. I almost got kicked out of community college for failing classes. After that wake-up call, I met with a counselor that helped me figure out a game plan to transfer to an Art school. Five years later, I finally transferred to Cal State Fullerton. While trying to stay focused in school, I worked a graveyard shift at UPS which definitely made things challenging.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I enjoy creating new worlds that are full of color. I’m either working on jungle or alien environments. I feel like these environments allow myself to create a place that captures my imagination perfectly. I’m most proud of my use of color, although it’s not perfect, I feel that the color choices I make elevate my work.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory would have to be going to a friend’s birthday party and staying up all night watching movies, playing video games and sneaking out of the house to skate around the neighborhood at 5 in the morning.
