Today we’d like to introduce you to Karina Velasco.
Karina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started on the path of spirituality and energy when I was seven years old. Both my parents meditated and they sent me to learn about energy with different teachers. In my teens, I continued my education in energy and started my career in radio and television as a host. My father was the David Letterman of Latin America with a show on the air called “Siempre en Domingo,” which aired for 30 years, so it was natural for me to join the entertainment industry. I worked in media full time until 2001. That year I was at the peak of my career as a correspondent for E! Entertainment Latin America with my own prime time TV show, but something was missing from my life. I knew I needed to get out in order to fulfill my purpose, which was still unknown at that time.
I decided to quit everything and traveled to India for a month, which eventually turned into a year. There I certified myself as a yoga and meditation instructor and trained in Ayurvedic medicine. That experience changed my life and when I got back something interesting happened — I wasn’t able to get any jobs in entertainment. It was like life was pulling me in another direction. That is how I started to teach yoga and meditation.
In 2006, I moved to Los Angeles and worked in LATV and the Super Estrella radio station. I soon found that my passion was not there anymore, so I quit and traveled again to mourn the loss of my career and my father’s death.
In 2009, my life changed again. I went through a divorce and moved to New York City for a year to become a natural food chef and health coach. I was blown away by what I learned there.
Once I was back in L.A, I decided to write my first book. One day, during my internship as a chef in a restaurant in Topanga, a man came to dinner with one of my friends. We started talking and he connected me with the director of Random House Mexico, two weeks later I had a signed contract and my career as a writer started. Since then, I have published seven books with them.
Still, there was something missing. At the end of that year, I had a problem with my coxis and went to bodywork therapy; there I suddenly felt an electric current run through my body and I was in a deep state of pleasure! I asked my therapist what it was and he said it was an energy orgasm. Two weeks later, I was in Bali training in Tantra, which is this ancient discipline of energy movement in the body, and ever since then I have trained for seven years in this discipline, massage, energy work and mind deprogramming.
In 2010 from a student, I became the teacher and began to teach energy and Tantra part-time while I was still training. I wrote three books on these topics and became an expert in sexuality, transformation and erotic mindfulness. That is how I got where I am…in a glimpse.
Has it been a smooth road?
Transformation is not an easy road, you need to let go of a lot of things that you have a strong attachment to. For example, in 2009 I was doing a master cleanse for 21 days and one morning I woke up and suddenly realized I needed to get a divorce. This was not an easy choice, but something I needed to do to continue on my path.
When I started to practice Tantra, the work there was deep. I could no longer hide from my body image issues and addiction to diets caused by working in the entertainment industry. My self-worth was always being challenged to look a certain way; I healed that, but it took a lot of inner work. Imagine the challenge of growing up in a Mexican entertainment royalty family, and then having to transition to just being “Karina,” and starting all over again. My life was easy — I had it all, money, fame, a prestigious family name, I basically had anything I wanted in a snap of a finger. Then I found myself starting all over again; earning little money compared to what I was used to, opening my own doors through hard work and making a name for myself as a teacher, author and therapist. That was not easy.
I grew up being a natural for television so it was easy for me to do that. As a teacher and therapist, you may be a natural in connecting with energy, which I was, but the mastery and recognition you gain come from diligent training, practice and deep inner work so you can actually take people into the deeper places of their being, and that is what I really wanted to do. Entertaining was easy compared to being there for other humans in their most intimate process of healing and transformation. It has been quite a journey.
Please tell us about Yorgasmic – Business & “The Future of Sex” – New Book.
My company is Yorgasmic, which the translation to English is “I am orgasmic.” That means you live in your natural state of pleasure, freedom, relaxation and creativity. In Yorgasmic, we make peace with sexuality, returning sex to its natural state and use our body wisdom to heal trauma, body image and low self-esteem. We use our critical mind, but it comes along for the ride. I am going to use an example: Imagine that you have a switch of energy in your body that you don’t even know is there because life, beliefs and the world does not acknowledge it, so it is turned off (like a switch). When it is off you usually wake up in the morning feeling overweight, grumpy and with low energy; it is a hassle to go through your day. What I do is help you turn that switch on so you can glow in life, meaning you will feel good about yourself, have energy to do everything you want and live with pleasure, playfulness and freedom.
It has probably happened to you in the sense that you miss that woman or man you once were that felt attractive, energized, happy and full of dreams. That is our nature and birthright. I guide you to remember who you are and return to your natural state so you can wake up and be full of life and energy. To live in a state of being that glows and makes you feel good about yourself, your life and live with the clarity of mind of what you want in life. That is erotic mindfulness — the awareness that you have this switch and glow that radiates within you and that with a simple three to five minute practice, you can activate and feel it whenever you want. You can turn that glow up to a five and get things done and feel fabulous, or you can turn it up to a ten and walk down the street and people will actually stare at you because that is what we all want — to glow and be free.
In the Yorgasmic Method, I will give you all the practices that are easy, fun and profound to get your glow going. What role has luck (good luck or bad luck) played in your life and business?
I think we are both lucky to have a life story that pushed us to discover the power of Sex Energy and energetic skills. I feel lucky to be able to shift a narrative about sex that is so misinformed and that has become distorted in a very negative way in society with sexual abuse, abuse of power and lack of intimacy between partners. It is not easy to have such a focused purpose because it is not easy to open people’s minds to this topic. I am lucky because the response from people so far has been so amazing that it keeps me motivated to stay on my path.
Luck is a mix of determination and the response of people, so yes, I am lucky.
