Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazz Shademan.
Jazz, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My journey started as soon as I was old enough to go to concerts at 14 years old. With my disposable camera in hand, I shot some of my favorite rock/punk bands. Years later, I enrolled at Santa Monica College, got my AA in Commercial Photography, and soon after graduating I started working and shooting for music blogs, like GrimyGoods and BuzzbandsLA. I was a Product photographer by day, but concert and event shooter by night. Music is a huge part of my life. I miss live shows and big crowds! But since the quarantine, I am unable to shoot shows I have been occupying my time photographing protests, marches and outdoor events.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Photography is expensive, so in the beginning the financial struggle was real. Sometimes when you don’t have the “right” equipment finding work can become difficult. My focus has always been to work on my skills and maintain a creative flow. Everything works itself out later. Never stop applying yourself, never give up, and always try to network- even if you’re shy!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Jazz Shademan Photography – what should we know?
As a photographer, I aim to shoot it all! But I primarily specialize in concert, events, and portrait photography. I’m the most proud of my concert photos. It’s hard work; when you’re moving around with heavy cameras/lenses, trying to find the right moment, the right light, it can be physically draining. Especially covering festivals. But nothing beats the rush of an amazing show, bonding with other photographers in the photo pit, and knowing you got a ton of sick shots! I try to use different filters for my photos, like prisms, but even that has gotten popular. It’s challenging finding new ways to shoot. I often find inspiration in editing, photoshop if your friend.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Staying inspired, looking to other artists who are doing cool things (but not comparing yourself), and being willing to learn new skills!
