Today we’d like to introduce you to Aizhou Liu.
Born in Beijing and raised in Shanghai, Aizhou Liu is a bilingual singer-songwriter, multi-genre composer/producer, and freelance model based in LA. She firmly believes music to be a vehicle of storytelling and of social change. Although she is a classically trained pianist, her writing style blends influences of pop, rock, electronica, and jazz. She is the winner of the 2019 Sting Competition by WGBH/PBS and writes music for visual media.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In most of my teenage years, my mother didn’t support me pursuing music because she didn’t think I would make a living at it, and for a few years, I strived for academic excellence while spending all my extra time in band practices and getting little sleep. I had gotten in university for a science degree but had failed to obtain a visa the first time, forcing me to reaccess my future and taking a gap year. I started working as a marketing specialist for Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai, an 18,000 seat venue while applying to Berklee.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
With Aizhou Music, I not only produce my own songs but also for others. I act as a mentor for the Los Angeles Inception Orchestra and will take on a leadership role very soon; I work as a freelancer for music production libraries to write tracks for documentaries/commercials; I arrange and produce tracks for other indie artists and so much more. I am also a self-taught coder and a technology enthusiast and am passionate about integrating technology with arts.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
There are so many wonderful people that I am grateful to be where I am. My mother had given me tremendous support over the last five years, my professors at Berklee who were patient with me and spent time outside class to mentor me; and my friends who were always there to provide creative feedback.
