Meet Edna Bazikian of Marbled Palette in Glendale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Edna Bazikian.

Edna, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Since I was a little girl I’ve had a passion for art. Thanks to my family, I had the opportunity to study arts since childhood and later graduated with a degree in painting. Having the chance to work with children at my teenage years and feeling the joy they brought to my life, I was determined to work with children as well. So I started studying childhood education and soon started working as art and preschool teacher at a lovely private school in Oregon.

The idea of starting this business was suggested to me by my coworkers at the same preschool. One of the teachers was planning her daughter’s birthday party and she was looking for a Disney character to entertain children at the party. Unfortunately, there were not many people offering this service in our town. That was when my coworkers started telling me to think about this business. By that time, I had already face painted our preschoolers for different occasions and I had enjoyed it very much. As a teacher, I was also familiar with storytelling and dramatic play, so the idea of entertaining and face painting children at events was very exciting and appealing to me. Later when me and my husband moved out of Oregon, I decided it was time for me to start this small children’s entertainment business. Almost two years have passed now and I’m very happy to be doing something I truly enjoy!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This journey has been full of ups and downs and an ongoing learning process for me. There’s been times I’ve thought I need a break but then I’ve reminded myself instead of getting discouraged by a few bumps on the road, I should look at the bigger picture and try to overcome the obstacles. The most challenging part of the business for me has been taking on different rolls all by myself. Although taking care of all aspects of the business such as marketing, advertising, customer service, book keeping, and face painting… is very interesting and gives me a chance to learn new things every day, it can also be time consuming and frustrating sometimes. I’m hoping that’ll change for me soon by adding new members to my team!

Marbled Palette – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business is called “Marbled Palette”. I offer children’s entertainment services such as face painting, glitter and temporary tattoos, princess parties and characters for different occasions. Considering I mostly receive face painting requests, I believe I’m best known for face painting.

I understand that it takes lots of time and effort for parents to plan even a simple birthday party and every parent wants to see their children happy on their birthday. Having that in mind, I try to offer parents an easy and pleasing experience. I listen to their requests and I try to customize a package that’ll work for them. For instance, I personalize new face painting designs for them or create a specific character entertainment package to match their party theme. I try to keep the booking process easy yet professional. I take care of everything I need for my set up at the party…In other words, I put my heart and soul into my work and try to offer a quality of service that I’d expect to receive for my own event.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me success is defined beyond the financial goals. It’s being able to have a positive impact on those who I work with. It’s when I receive good feedback from my customers. Success is the rewarding moment when I hold a mirror for a child to see their face paint and I witness their purest emotions. Sometimes it’s a smile, sometimes amazement, wonder, giggles, laughter, a big hug or a simple “thank you” that comes from the heart.
