Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Moen.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in Alaska for most of my life but I have also lived in other states too. When I was younger, I would watch YouTube videos of different makeup looks and would practice on myself and friends. Once I graduated high school, I moved down to LA for three months while I was going to a makeup school in Hollywood called Napoleon Perdis Makeup Academy. After I finished makeup school, I moved back to Alaska for a little bit to save up more money and then I moved back to California in Fall of 2014 and started attending Santa Monica College where I graduated with a AS degree is Cosmetology. After I finished Cosmetology School, I went back for my Esthetician license and got a job working at Blushington on the weekends while during the week I am a personal assistant for online clothing store called The Naughty Girl Shop as well as do freelance makeup jobs. Currently, I am still building my brand and networking and trying to get my name out there more as a makeup artist and esthetician.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
For the most part it has been a smooth road. While I was going to Cosmetology school, I was fortunate enough to be able to have a flexible job that allowed me to take classes as well as freelance when I could. The only struggles would be is just building yourself as a trusted artist for your clients. There are a lot of talented artist out there and you just have to keep hustling to get where you want to be.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Jordan Mckenzie Beauty – what should we know?
On my Instagram, I have my business name as Jordan Mckenzie Beauty with Mckenzie being my middle name and I chose the word beauty instead of makeup because I have a passion for both makeup and skincare. Even though I did go to cosmetology school, I focus more on hairstyling than anything else that has to do with hair. I mostly specialize in beauty, fashion, lifestyle/commercial, event and bridal makeup. As for what I am most proud of as a company is that I am doing something I love and that it is my own. Whenever I am working at Blushington, doing hair/makeup for The Naughty Girl Shop or working freelance it never feels like I am working. What sets me apart from others is my big heart and determination. I always want my clients to feel beautiful both inside and out and let their confidence shine through.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I wouldn’t be where I am or know the stuff I do if it weren’t for the great mentors that have helped me along the way so far. I am always constantly learning from such incredible people in the industry that I am forever grateful for. My first ever mentor was Cara Liedlich Ashman, her Instagram is @ Carastyle, and she taught me the basics of what I need to know as an artist, how to be professional as an assistant and on my own and also just everything about the business and working on movie sets. She taught me a lot and I am so grateful to have her still as a mentor when I need it. After Cara, I went to makeup school and met my two instructors Lio Ramirez and Lana Krizki they were amazing in teaching me beauty, fashion, glamour and makeup for photography. Another great mentor for life and how to run a business has been my sister. She wears many hats and has always been such a determined business entrepreneur and I am constantly learning from her. I am very lucky to have a sister like her. Last by not least just everyone who I have worked with on sets, Lyndsay Zavitz, who is an amazing celebrity makeup artist and I have the chance to assistant her for a bit, my co-workers at Blushington and even my instructors from SMC have all been incredible. I have met and am still going to meet people in the industry who are going to inspire me to keep getting better at what I love.
