Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Ta.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My parents were Vietnamese/Chinese refugees who fled to Norway. I was born in a small town called Lillehammer. When I turned 18, I moved to Los Angeles and worked at my family’s nail salon. I was a nail technician for 15 years, where I learned attention to detail and gained a steady hand. About 5 years ago, I began to pursue permanent makeup. At first, it was just to expand my services at the salon, but then I discovered microblading—like so many of my students, I stumbled upon pictures online—and a whole new world opened up. I couldn’t believe the detail and I loved how natural the best brows looked—taking spare brows and transforming them into beautiful, full brows. At the time, there wasn’t much training in L.A., so I travelled across the world to work with experienced teachers. I had these beautiful images in my mind and I wanted to learn how to create them with my hand. Learning how became my passion and love. In 2016, I won the World of Microblading championship in Amsterdam and I opened my own studio and school here in Los Angeles with an amazing team that shares my passion for microblading.
Has it been a smooth road?
When I started, there weren’t many reputable teachers here in the States, and this led to much frustration with my work in the beginning. But I think this turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as I began to make my own discoveries in the studio, and it inspired me to travel across the world to find the pioneers in microblading. And it inspired me to open a training center, where I bring the lessons I’ve learned all over the world here to Los Angeles. To this day, I am still willing to travel anywhere to learn new techniques that I can bring back to my clients and share with my students. Some of my teachers even travel here to teach at my studio.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Microblading LA story. Tell us more about the business.
We specialize in microblading—performing services and teaching the next generation of microblading artists their craft. As a studio, we are known for extremely natural looking eyebrows and working with diverse face shapes and skin types. Our portfolio goes right on Instagram, where anyone can see our work. It speaks for itself and we’re very proud of it! All of our artists maintain the same high standards and love what they do.
As a school, we want to raise the bar for the entire industry with passion and commitment to learning. Permanent makeup artists can come to our school and learn techniques from all over the world. Our vision is that students will come back to our school again and again, as we develop new tools and techniques.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Microblading is booming right now and this is just the beginning. When someone get good results, people ask about it and they tell people. My business exploded through Instagram and word of mouth, and I think this is the tip of the iceberg; lots of people still don’t know about it. I think we’ll see microblading mainstream in a way that botox did years back. And just like with botox, there will soon be alternatives to microblading with different effects, like ombre microshading, which just coming to the U.S. recently. With this much demand, we’ll also need more and more trained artists in more and more cities. Our school is helping to facilitate this growth!
