Today we’d like to introduce you to Janine Pierce.
Janine Pierce, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Started out competing in performance dog sports with my own dogs and developed a passion for dog training. Read everything I could get my hands on, volunteered extensively with rescue organizations and went to countless seminars etc., just because I was fascinated by human/dog relationships. Before I knew it, people were offering me money for helping their dogs, and a trainer whose class I was assisting in unexpectedly turned the class over to me. I was still working as an engineer at the time but found myself doing more and more dog training for pay, never really thinking it was an option for a full-time career change.
After a couple of years juggling these two lives, I officially started my company in 1998, and took the plunge into my new career full-time at 39 years old in 1999, when I completed my last engineering job. My company now sees around 200 dogs a week in group classes and private consultations.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When I started my company I had no idea how to run a business, and it has definitely not been a smooth road. Many valuable (and painful) lessons have been learned during the last 17 years…
J9’s K9s Dog Training – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a full-service dog training company, offering classes in everything from basic to advanced obedience and specialty courses to modification of the most serious behavior issues. We specialize in showing people how much fun dog training can be, which results in them spending more/better quality time working with their dogs. Our slogan is “Learn while you play!”.
I am proud of so many things about J9’s K9s. Seeing relationships between people and their dogs improve is extremely rewarding, and one of the more unexpected byproducts of our company is the friendships that have formed between our students.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me isn’t about getting rich; the “psychic income” I enjoy daily while I follow my bliss is the most rewarding thing I can imagine.
