Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacey Zimmerman.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been doing some form of art for about as long as I can remember, in fact, I have a certificate and ribbon for getting First Place in my first-grade coloring contest. The picture was titled “cat”, lol. I took various art and writing classes all through high school till there were none left to take. Upon graduating, I was hired by a small business start-up to design stuffed animals that would be able to accommodate 6 to 8 oz. baby bottles, I also did some freelance logo work for my dad and some of his real estate and other friends here and there. This was way back in the days before computers when items such as flyers or business cards and t-shirt designs were done largely by hand. I never truly found my niche though, and for the next decade or so, other than sketching and writing poetry for my own pleasure, I basically stepped away from the artistic field altogether.
Fast forward till about ten years later, when my oldest sister, also an artist, opened up a gallery in downtown Los Angeles. I attended her grand opening and was absolutely blown away by what other artist were doing and was so inspired after attending that I knew I had to get back in touch with my right side of the brain! I was especially attracted by some of the cool collage style art that was being presented, something I had previously never given any real thought to before, but now I would!
It was also around this time that I purchased my first house, and bored with the what was being sold as decorative art, decided I’d do my own. So that need to spice up my surroundings, I decided to give the idea of a collage medium a try, which I have happily continued to do to this day.
The best thing about being the creative type, in my opinion, is being able to see your own personal growth through the art I’ve created. One thing I’m sure of, I’ve finally found my niche, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me next.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve struggled with finding the confidence in putting myself and my art out into the public eye. Outside of friends and family, I’ve never shared the artistic side of myself since I was in school. And that was quite awhile ago.
I’ve finally come to the realization that regardless of any negative feedback I might receive, since it’s a real possibility as my art is not for everyone, I also might find out people like my art and might be interested in my art, and I’ll never know this either unless I was willing to put myself out in the public eye.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My husband Johnny and my two daughters, Zoe Kay and Eve, all deserve credit for encouraging me to pursue my art and giving me their helpful critique along the way.
