Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Danger.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I started photographing humans, from live music to portraits to nightlife, a little over ten years ago in my hometown of Portland, Oregon. When I first moved to Los Angeles in 2014, I was working a full-time office job with my photography on the back-burner, and trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life.
After lamenting that I wish I could just get paid to pet cats because I’m really quite good at it, my friend suggested I combine my two greatest passions and become a cat photographer. I didn’t think that could be a thing, but after a couple of months of him nudging me, I decided to give it a shot.
Here I am, just a few years later, and I’m officially a professional cat photographer, and absolutely loving everything about Los Angeles!
Please tell us about your art.
I’m a photographer, specializing in cats and other animals. Can you believe that?! I take photos for private clients, magazines or other publications, and for animal rescues and shelters, to help raise awareness and encourage adoptions!
Whatever my subject, I always aim to capture their unique personality, individual beauty, and even a little bit of humor! It’s important for my clients to feel like they have photographs that are every bit as special as the furry family member, a true piece of art to hang on their wall and share with friends and loved ones.
Great photography can make a world of difference in the rescue and shelter world. A good adoption photo can stir up interest in a cat, dog, or other homeless pet, and be just the thing to get them into a great home! If my photos have saved just one animal, I feel like I’ve used my skills and talents for something so much bigger and more important than myself. It’s incredibly rewarding!
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
Keep creating, and always strive to improve! If you don’t hate a lot of your old work after a few months or years, you’re not improving enough, haha!
Taking inspiration from other artists in your field can help you develop your style, but make sure what you’re creating is original and truly your own! I find it really fun and interesting to seek inspiration in other fields, like interpreting poetry into a painting, a film inspiring sculpture, or music influencing your photography. Challenge your brain to think about your art differently!

I’m also an exhibitor at various cat conventions, including CatCon in Pasadena this June 29th and 30th at the Pasadena Convention Center!
