Today we’d like to introduce you to Yosiell Lorenzo.
Yosiell, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Originally from the New England area, I moved out west in 2010 to pursue my art full-time. Things didn’t really go according to plan. Only knowing one person out here and with the occasional speed bump life throws your way I felt lost and confused. I started searching out for things that looked and felt familiar, things from my childhood.
My mom’s love for the occult, antiques, tarot cards and trips to the Salem, MA all came rushing back to me heavily influencing my work.
I started to find my rhythm out here, and in 2015 after working a design job and simultaneously building up my fan base, I took the leap into full-time art. Navigating this career is still a struggle at times, but it has been worth it.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I’m an illustrator and sculptor. My illustrations are based on ghostly kids of the Victorian era whose favorite holiday also happens to be Halloween. I call this body of work The Orphans of Dudleytown. Dudleytown is one of Connecticut’s forgotten cursed town. I grew up about an hour south of here and always heard stories about this town. When it came time to build The Orphan’s world I wanted them to be based off of an actual place. My illustrations always start on paper, once the drawing is done I scan them and bring them into photoshop where I do my crosshatching and coloring. I also create resin busts based off of my orphan illustrations, and these tend to be more one of a kind pieces.
I tend to leave the message to the viewers and hope that they find their own interpretation. Perhaps a place for those who love all things spooky and victorian to escape to.
Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
I think the role of an artist are probably still the same; you have two kinds of artist I think…those who have a message to say with their work and those who still create what they enjoy regardless of their surroundings or what’s currently going on in their world. I think current events affect my work in the sense that it causes me to create a world around things that I enjoy, a safe place, an escape.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
People can see all my illustrations and resin works on my website at www.yosielllorenzo.com. I have an online shop there as well where you can pick up my goods along with limited edition items.
