Today we’d like to introduce you to Karyn & Maya Holland.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Karyn Holland has been led by divine creativity throughout her life and career. She started out as a wardrobe stylist and set designer in fashion, TV and film in Atlanta, and it was there that she first learned how to blend aesthetic storytelling with soulful depth – dressing a scene wasn’t just about the clothes, it was about the feeling underneath them.
Though her film career was creatively rich, Karyn felt a deeper calling pulling at her. A leap of faith brought her to California with nothing but a sense that something more was waiting for her here, and she immersed herself in the ancient healing arts of yoga, meditation, Energy Medicine®, and the Akashic Records. That’s where her true purpose as a teacher and guide woke up.
Karyn’s husband and Citrine Co-Founder, Jay Holland, is a visionary and brand innovator with over 40 years of experience in the luxury leather goods industry. As the founder of Mulholland, a global leather goods brand, Jay led manufacturing, opened retail stores, and built a thriving company with over 500 employees. His entrepreneurial spirit and eye for timeless design laid the foundation for what was to come.
After a significant life shift in 2014, Karyn and Jay merged their creative energies to design a line of women’s leather handbags, each one embedded with a healing crystal and a message of inspiration. In 2018, that shared vision blossomed into their first boutique, Be One With, in downtown San Anselmo. As the business evolved, they relocated to downtown Larkspur in 2020, renaming the brand Citrine – a name that reflected their truest essence and Karyn’s birthstone, a symbol of joy, abundance, and manifestation.
Their oldest daughter Maya grew up steeped in the creativity and soul-led vision of her parents, with a natural calling toward healing and transformation. Maya forged her own path, studying business, Energy Medicine® and hypnotherapy while building a foundation in marketing during her years living in London.
After returning home with a renewed sense of purpose, she wove her own gifts into the family vision. Now, Karyn and Maya lead Citrine as a mother-daughter team – blending intuition, creativity, and generational wisdom into a living, breathing brand.
Today, Citrine is more than a boutique. It’s a retail sanctuary, a wellness collective, a yoga studio, and a community gathering space – the embodiment of Karyn’s lifelong devotion and Jay’s visionary spirit, now guided by the next generation.
Citrine is a living expression of their shared belief that what we wear, how we move, and how we gather can always raise our vibration.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
After Jay, Karyn’s husband, sold his business in 2012 following a heart attack, that was the most challenging chapter – and also the biggest catalyst for change. It was ultimately where Citrine was born. That crisis became Karyn’s invitation to follow a desire to create something deeper.
Having come from teaching yoga, Karyn knew nothing about running a business. She didn’t even know what a margin was! She learned everything from the ground up – designing, manufacturing, margins, opening a retail store – all of it. As she learned and the business grew, we relocated to a new town, and opened our doors six weeks before the pandemic.
It was terrifying – we’d just signed a new lease and then the whole world shut down. We hustled, did phone appointments, and the whole town really came together to help us keep our doors open until we were allowed to reopen.
As we’ve continued to grow, the challenges have shifted – now it’s more about running a conscious business that’s also profitable. We believe every business has a soul, just like every person has a soul mission, and Karyn stays deeply aware of honoring that mission and moving in alignment with it.
You always have to get creative about how to keep people coming back. You can never take your foot off the gas – things are always evolving and changing, and we have to stay current.
Working in a family business and separating work from personal can also be its own kind of challenge.
And then there’s the layered nature of what we’ve built – retail, healing, and a fitness studio, all under one roof. It’s really like running three different businesses that need to look seamless and integrated from the outside. Each one has completely different marketing needs, staffing needs, rhythms – and combining all of them is a genuinely fun challenge.
As you know, we’re big fans of Citrine. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Citrine is a sanctuary where style, fitness, and wellness all meet. We’re a healing center dedicated to expanding access to emotional, spiritual, and community-based wellness. Rooted in the belief that community is medicine – that gathering together can raise our vibration – we provide inclusive programs, sacred space, and transformative practices that support people in healing, connecting, and thriving. Our work exists to make sure no one is excluded from the opportunity to heal, grow, and belong.
We’re known for our boutique-style fitness and small group weight training classes, crystals sourced from all over the world, and beautiful European-inspired clothing lines. What sets us apart is that you can walk into Citrine and find whatever you need in one place – a curated gift, a fitness class that will make you sweat, a nourishing hypnosis session, yoga, a private massage, a tarot reading. We have it all. The days of hunting all over town for your health providers are over – come to Citrine and it’s under one roof, from practitioners to acupuncturists to massage therapists and psychic readers.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Every single piece of inventory is blessed with a prayer before it ever goes out onto the sales floor. There’s selenite crystal in the paint on our walls, and a crystal grid underneath our building. We’re that intentional with everything we offer, and our clients can feel it the moment they walk in.
We cleanse the space energetically almost daily, and we regularly cleanse our crystals too – it’s so important to keep their energy pure and clean. They’re the guardians of the light in our space.
We’re also expanding into a non-profit healing center focused on bringing affordable care to everyone. It will carry everything we offer now, just on a much larger scale, in a space that overlooks the water with an outdoor sanctuary built in. The vision is a center that brings education, preventative health, movement, and science-based practices together under one roof.
