Check Out Sergio Rivera’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sergio Rivera.

Sergio, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born in Miami, Fl and raised in the Bronx, NY from two Puerto Rican parents. Puerto Rican and Caribbean culture has always been a prevalent aspect in my life. New York’s diversity gave me the sounds of Fania All-Stars, KRS-One and Joy division and ignited my thirst for music that explored themes critiquing society as well as self reflection.

When I was 14, my sister went to a party and a random man gave her a guitar. She was beautiful and this was nothing new. Later that night she gave that guitar to me. It changed my life. I decided I would study music. Even without the financial means to afford lessons. I taught myself and auditioned without knowing how to read music. After graduating I pursued teaching music and producing. During the pandemic I met the most amazing human, Asanni Armon. A fantastic rapper who commissioned me to work on her debut album. Our musical chemistry and ideas blended so well that we decided to start an independent label called SIREN EMPIRE ENTERTAINMENT.

At the end of 2025, I released my debut EP No Soy De Aqui under the artist name s.e.r. I composed it with the help of Massiel Cedeno (vocals and production) and Fernando Hoyos. It explores themes of feeling foreign to even the things we think we know; like searching for a version of Puerto Rico that exists in family stories and dreams rather than in realty, letting go and accepting my sisters death and learning to manifest.
In 2026, Masisiel and Fernando joined me again for Ni Soy De Alla: This EP dives deeper into questioning who we are as humans and what we can possibly do if we begin to dissect and truly try and find our selves.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a tough long road. Growing up in the 90’s Bronx with dyslexia and not having the resources for private tutoring meant that I continued to struggle with reading up until I reached college. It made learning to read music even harder. But that also showed me other abilities that I had like pattern recognition and mathematics. Both of which have been almost like super powers when it comes to music composition and production.

My sisters death when I was 25 put a weight on my heart that sent me into a deep depression that took me years to crawl out of. But truthfully even with all the trails and tribulations life has presented, music has continued to be a shining light proves to be ever fulfilling.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a producer, musician, and composer. I specialize in composition and music production. Sometimes I feel like both those things can bleed into one another. I’m most known for my classical guitar playing. I am most proud of my recent EP Ni Soy De Alla. I put every ounce of my heart into those songs. What sets me apart from everyone else is how my brain interprets sound and frequencies. This allows me to imagine arrangements differently and compositions in new and exciting ways.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Being on a greyhound going from New York to Miami to visit family. I was around 8 and an older kid on the bus asked me what I was listening to. I think it was ace of base at the time. He took my cassette out and placed his in, It was the first time I ever listened to Wu tang 36 chambers of Death. RZA’s lush production was the first time I ever heard jazz and classical music being deconstructed and contorted into a new and exciting sound. It’s one of those moments as a kid when you realize you woke up for the first time.
