Today we’d like to introduce you to The Hat Ladies LisaP And Joanie.
Hi The Hat Ladies, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We are Lisa and Joanie Pimentel. We are sisters, rockstars, and school teachers.
We grew up in a loud, free-range household filled with lots of kids and lots of music. Our mother’s Italian family played a massive role in our upbringing—there was always singing, dancing, and endless laughter.
Joanie played cello throughout high school, sang in choir, and was selected for multiple state and district ensembles. Lisa played saxophone in the high school band and drummed in various local rock bands before studying Music Education at the University of Massachusetts.
Eventually, Joanie began raising a family while teaching music at the South Shore Conservatory, and Lisa started teaching music in Randolph, MA—a experience that brought her immense joy. Though up to this point both were constantly writing, recording, and touring with various Boston music groups, we never played in the same band up to this point.
That changed when Lisa’s rock band signed a record deal with Warner Brothers, prompting a move to Los Angeles. Joanie eventually followed, and before long,we were finally teaching at the same school and writing, recording and touring together in the same band—Joanie on bass/vocals and Lisa on guitar/vocals. Their rock band enjoyed a strong run, earning sync placements in major feature films, television,
When our drummer (and 4th grade teacher) left to become a school principal upstate, we shifted gears to record our first children’s album, “You’re a Star.” Since then, we have released three full-length albums and are currently under consideration for a Grammy nomination.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The hustle began when we decided to make music for a living and never let up. We are constantly working on our music and trying to connect to a larger world in meaningful and relevant ways.
To be doing this work means having to relentlessly stay focused while being open and fluid, being fierce but being kind and showing grace, being natural and authentic while looking good and energetic, sounding technically competitive without using AI in an expanding media world that sounds and looks perfect, When things get frantic we try to remember who we are and why we do this.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We have both been creating music for their entire lives. We are both singers and play multiple instruments. We are big fans of music education and learning how to read music, and are self taught on most of our instruments. Joanie plays cello, bass, violin, viola, piano, accordion and some guitar and drums too. Lisa plays guitar, drums, trumpet, saxophone, flute, clarinet and some piano too. We are both songwriters with hundreds of songs between us, many that have been featured in movies, television, and video games including “GHOSTBUSTERS (Answer The Call-2016) A SIMPLE FAVOR (2018), SANTA CLARITA DIET (Netflix), MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE (2025), ROCKBAND (video game) and much more. We have also been featured on NPR and Billboard magazine. Lisa is a also music producer, engineer and composer with many professional credits.
I think what sets us apart is our unique story. Everyone has one.
g
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
This world is so crazy and I think these days “what matters most to us” is something we are trying to find in every moment. How can our songs help? How can we relate? How can we connect? How can we build? How can lovingly combat? How can we find hope? How can we stay strong? How can we tell the truth? How can we experience and share joy? How can we help? How can we be there for our students, our colleagues, our families and friends and the entire world ?
And to do all this, what do we need? We need to be organized, healthy, informed and kind, We need to listen and be gracious, open, and curious. We have to care and sometimes we have to try to care.
