Rising Stars: Meet Marissa Lopez of Los Angeles / OC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Lopez.

Hi Marissa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Like every story, it starts with some form of trauma. My grandpa passed away in 2011, and after seeing a new Muppet movie months earlier, I really sought the Muppets for comfort. I worked at Walt Disney World for a small time, and it helped fuel my love for the Muppets as well. Years later, I started finding an interested in collecting Muppets, which happened right around the same time as having my son. I think I once again found comfort in the Muppets because I wanted to have something outside of motherhood, and collecting helped me have something for myself that wasn’t for anyone else. I ended up posting a video on TikTok about a small piece of my collection, and it ended up snowballing into sharing a room in my house loving called The Muppet Room, which ended up helping me be apart of a community of Muppet fans. Getting to create content to share with others about something is something I never really pictured for myself.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
A lot of self doubt has gotten in the way of creating content and even mental health struggles. There’s also the work of having to constantly make content, follow trends, and almost having to be the first to do something in order for things to matter. I gave up on really doing content for others, and have tried harder on posting things that I actually enjoy, and just hoping others like it along the way.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a content creator that focuses on collecting and celebrating the puppets Jim Henson created. I collect Muppets, and I share my house (and mainly a room) that is full of them. I’m mostly known for having The Muppet Room (which also has a song dedicated to it called Meet Me in The Muppet Room) which is a previous dining room turned into a room full of Muppets. I’m really proud of helping others embrace their love for things out loud. I’ve been told many times that my content has helped them be open with the things they love, regardless of it feeling childish or fear of others judging them. Getting to help others embrace their inner child is a huge reward and makes creating content worth it.

What matters most to you?
My husband and son matter the most to me. I wouldn’t have a Muppet room if it wasn’t for my husband’s constant support and the way he constantly inspires me. Getting to also see my son start to really love the Muppets and understand their humor has been a huge reward as well.
