Today we’d like to introduce you to Warren Jones.

Hi Warren, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in the suburbs of Washington, DC. In 2014 I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, and moved to Los Angeles the next year in 2015. I majored in Film with a minor in Africana Studies, and moved here with the intention of making a career as a video editor and writer. While my first few jobs included everything from sales to motivational videos, I eventually landed a job assistant editing for a family-oriented Youtube channel. From there I’ve been lucky enough to edit film, shorts, sketches (while also directing); eventually I landed a job with Buzzfeed at the height of their popularity. From there I’ve spent the better part of a decade working in film marketing for several major streamers and studios, and this past year have gone back to the freelance world on a variety of projects.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m grateful that, while not exactly smooth, I have had a continuous upward trajectory. I’d say one of the biggest challenges has been making things work without a car; I’ve since rectified that issue but definitely had to get creative to be where I needed to be. And while everyone has to deal with the occasional layoff or production ending, learning how to pivot quickly within the industry was something I had to do very quickly.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work in post production; managing lots of footage very quickly as well as editing both short and long pieces that live on various platforms and social media. I would say my speciality is definitely doing behind-the-scenes content, from mini-documentaries to sneak peaks to sizzle reels. I’m most proud of a few pieces that ended up on the Blu-ray for their respective movies; my favorite is a five-minute look that I edited for the Barbie movie a couple of years ago.

I think what sets me apart from others is definitely my eye for footage. I love going through the hours of stuff we’d shoot on set and picking what’s best for the piece. It can be for something I’m editing or a highlight reel I’m making for someone else–either way I love getting to dive in and watch everything available and being able to recall what’s best at a moment’s notice.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned has definitely been to just keep going. Not every project is huge, or even all that important, but more than anything you’ve got to do your best work on it and move on to the next one. The more you do, the better you’ll get, and the importance of projects will come with that experience.
